Fear of Flying? Your Imagination Is Probably Flying Faster Than the Plane
When people hear I'm a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist helping clients overcome their fear of flying, they sometimes assume I've always loved planes.
I really haven't.
In fact, my very first flight wasn't on a comfortable holiday jet with a complimentary cup of tea and a packet of pretzels. Oh no... my first flight was in a tiny light aircraft, circling Blackpool.
Let's just say it wasn't exactly the gentle introduction I'd have chosen!
As the little plane climbed into the sky, every bump felt enormous. Every noise seemed suspicious. My imagination was working far harder than the aircraft's engine.
I was convinced something terrible was about to happen.
Then something changed.
I started talking to the pilot.
He patiently explained what all those strange noises were, why the aircraft moved the way it did, and how flying actually works. He explained the science behind turbulence, why planes are designed to cope with it, and why what felt frightening to me was actually completely normal.
The more I understood, the calmer I became.
The fear didn't magically disappear in an instant, but understanding replaced so many of the frightening stories my anxious brain had been creating.
That's something I see time and again with my clients.
Our brains are remarkable, but they're also brilliant at imagining worst-case scenarios. When we're anxious, our minds become experts at filling in the blanks—usually with dramatic plots that would give Hollywood screenwriters a run for their money!
The truth is, fear of flying isn't really about the plane.
It's about what your brain believes could happen.
As a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist, I help people change that relationship with flying. Rather than endlessly analysing where the fear came from, we focus on where you want to go—quite literally.
Whether your goal is:
Enjoying a family holiday without weeks of worry.
Visiting loved ones abroad.
Saying yes to an exciting work opportunity.
Or simply boarding a plane without your heart trying to set a new Olympic record.....there is another way.
One of my favourite moments is hearing from clients after they've landed.
Instead of telling me how frightened they were, they tell me about the amazing holiday they had, the wedding they attended, the grandchildren they finally visited, or the memories they made.
That's when you know the fear is no longer the main character.
If fear of flying has been keeping you grounded, it doesn't have to stay that way.
You don't have to white-knuckle every flight, avoid holidays, or spend weeks dreading something that should be exciting.
Sometimes, all it takes is understanding your mind a little differently—and giving it the tools to respond differently too.
If you're ready to discover how Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help you fly with greater confidence, I'd love to help.
