Hi, I am Matt, founder of Hopeful Tides Counselling and Psychotherapy.

I am a BACP registered integrative counsellor and psychotherapist, working with adults and young people to help them live fully again.

I work in person in Spitalfields, near Shoreditch, East London, and online across the UK.

A shout out to Therapy in London, who I work alongside. You can learn more about me on their directory, or head over to my website to find out more about how I work.

Today I registered at the University of Greenwich as an official postgraduate Masters student, studying Therapeutic Psychotherapy and Counselling.

I have already put years of study into qualifying and earning my degree in Psychotherapy… however it turns out I am not finished yet. Three more years of study lie ahead.

If you had told the version of me who was rebuilding his life from nothing, battling low self worth, imposter syndrome, and addiction, that this day would come, I am not sure he would have believed you.

I am doing this because I want to keep developing. I love the challenge, and the wonderful journey of self discovery this kind of training brings.

But mostly, I am doing it so I can continue to be the most ethical and effective therapist I can be, someone who can meet my clients, and my future clients, with more skill, more understanding, and more care.

Also, I own it, I am a geek and today felt like Christmas.

A follow up to my previous video on people pleasing.

This graphic pulls together the three things I encourage clients to try: building the pause before answering, starting with low stakes no’s, and noticing the guilt without letting it talk you out of the boundary.

People pleasing is not a personality flaw. It started as a smart way to stay safe, and it can be unlearned. There is nothing wrong with you for finding this hard. It usually means you are caring, attuned, and good at reading a room, not weak.

Get in touch if this is something you would like support with.

If you say yes when you want to say no, apologise for things that are not your fault, or feel guilty every time you disappoint someone, you are not too nice. You are people pleasing, and it is one of the most common patterns I see in the room.

It usually starts as a smart way to stay safe: keeping the peace, staying agreeable, avoiding conflict. It probably worked, once. The problem is the environment you built it for is not always the one you are in now.

There is nothing wrong with you for finding this hard. It usually just means you are caring and attuned, not weak.

Get in touch if this is something you would like support with.

Yesterday’s video looked at what anxiety actually is, and why trying to get rid of it usually makes it worse.

This graphic pulls together the three things I encourage clients to try instead, welcoming anxiety, questioning the thought, and getting curious about how it manifests in the body.

If you would like support putting any of this into practice, my website has more, or you are welcome to send me a message to book a consultation.

Anxiety is not something to fight. It is something to understand.

In this video I share what anxiety actually is, why it exists, and three ways to start living alongside it rather than against it.

If any of this feels familiar, you are not alone, and you are not broken.

If you would like support with this, my website has more, or you are welcome to send me a message to book a consultation.

Also, keep an eye out for a surprise cameo from coffee-cat around the 1.22 mark.

Filming a short intro for my Psychology Today profile this week. However, my cats and dog decided they were also part of the production team, with several interruptions for chasing, attention seeking, and general chaos. Turns out therapy office etiquette does not apply to pets, so a few extra takes were needed.

Full video is on my Psychology Today profile, link in bio, and you can learn more about my work on my website.

Overthinking rarely feels like a choice. It can show up as worry about what is coming, a thought that will not leave you alone, endless planning, or going over something that has already happened.

Underneath it, overthinking is often an attempt to control an outcome, a way of trying to create certainty where there is none.

Swipe through for the four ways overthinking tends to show up, the thinking patterns that often sit underneath it, and three practical ways to work with it.

If any of this sounds familiar, get in touch for a free consultation. I work in person from London UK, and also offer online sessions.
