Excretion is a core life process like respiration, digestion and reproduction. Everything I practise is rooted in physiology and is ultimately cellular, I look at everything through this lens.
You ll have heard me talk about ‘undigested life material’? This is what causes emotional armouring that shows up in muscle tone, posture, clenched jaw and poor digestion.
So many people who arrive in my room report, years of therapy is really helpful in accessing understanding and knowing of our patterns, behaviours and roots - but being in relationship with those things requires a felt knowledge. The knowledge of interoception. The knowing of oneself at a somatic level. Step one: FEELING IN
To start with many people find they have little connection to what’s there. They can’t feel their feet, face or hands, let alone the cranial or which lung is inflating less that the other. Step Two: CLARIFYING with Cranial work and somatic psychotherapy by connecting of emotional tone and experience to your physical experience of Self.
The excretion part is a constant in this process. Tears, sound, yawning can be some of the first signs of opening up. Shaking and large muscle twitch releases also feature. Excretion requires movement. In the subtle realms of CST when we find a lack of motion in the fluids, tissues and tides of the body it’s usually a guide that somato-emotional constipation has set in - either because of a temporary physical or emotional trigger, or because of a life time accumulation of unexpressed emotions held in the tissues.
Stage 3: MOVING IT THROUGH
Cranial work supports this and indeed we literally move it through in the room, shaking, sounding, pushing away, kicking, stamping. As we work the desire to move grows - many cultures refer to this in different ways, awakening, kundalini rising, life force returning. Finding how you continue this process is part of that. Identifying resources that we could call emotional laxatives (!) because in the movement, through the sweat, we excrete that which no longer serves us. Moving into clarity. Leaving the past behind. Keeping yourself clear beyond that relies on these resources. My tool of excretion is dancing. Yours?

I have to be honest. The visual exhausts me. So does not making typos and being precise with graphics. But I do love poetry. As An English Lit BA, I always feel my study of the human experience started here. A I m not sure any author or writer so finely observed the human condition as DH Lawrence. Immediately my brain says what about Dickens? What about Anais Nin? What about Tolstoy? Obviously there can be no true answer to this question. Only many perspectives, just like the many facets of you - every angle reveals something slightly different, but all are revealing and precious in their own way. So here’s a poem that I felt encapsulated something that is very human.

That the totality of a thing is often perfect. And then our ego and insecurities get to work on it and can reduce it to shreds in moments.

So the question might be where can we be more accepting of the totality in a way that allows us to appreciate it more? Whether that’s in your Self concept, your physical form, your relationships or your work?

Taking time to identify what resources and supports you is something we can all do without the need of a therapist. The same is true of getting into the habit of feeling in to your body to sense where feels good and where doesn’t. Have a listen and see if this helps in your personal practise and orientation to support, resource and growing the comfort in your physical self

It might seem strange to attribute our relationship to living with our relationship to dying, but the two are very much in a permanent tension and polarity. The way we fear death causing us also to fear life by avoiding the risk it takes to fully live.

James Hollis says in ‘A Life of Meaning’:

“We die whenever fear governs our choices. We die when we sacrifice growth for security. We die when whenever we choose a convenient certainty over an inconvenient mystery”

Never one to hold back, his tough therapy is a slap to the face - reminding us that we are avoiding our very Selves when we play it safe.

What is curious is that we can suppress our fear of living and dying so completely out of consciousness that the only way it shows up is in our pain, our depression, our tiredness, the ache in our joints and the stiffness in our bodies - stiffness that perhaps mimics the rigidity of our lives.

This is where a MindBody SomaticPsychological approach is helpful. In Chinese Medicine, there is an idea that the flexibility of your hands and wrists reflects the flexibility of your mind. So whether you come at it through the door of your Mind or the door of your Body doesn’t matter - ultimately both doors lead back to the two being as in relationship to one another as life and death. The only question is the fluidity, flexibility, coherence and courageous truth of that relationship.

Unfurling nervous systems. This is both a metaphor and a process of active imagination and sometimes an experience. Releasing patterns of trauma and growing your nervous system flexibility. As teachers plants also make for wonderful metaphors. Can you feel the expansion? Have you felt that shift?

Too many men are still suffering so much isolation, not because they are failing to do the work, but precisely because they are doing the work. This is not a therapeutic request, this is setting an intention to meet a social need that supports connection, sharing and friendship - not as part of a healing model but supplementary to it. A bit of normal but with evolved social expectations. Community building for normal with new rules of engagement. - Please forward to any man you know who is ‘on the path’ to DM me what they want/ed or need/ed socially at their lowest ebb

And as a starting point do you feel socially disconnected because you are a man who doesn’t want to drink regularly / heavily or at all
