A workplace can become a battlefield, or it can become a bridge.

THE CHOICE BEGINS WITH HOW WE SEE EACH OTHER.

❤️ Let’s finish this series by building a bridge.

Complete this sentence:

“A better multicultural workplace begins when we all...”

👇 Fill in the blank with just ONE thought.

Different countries. Different cultures. Different stories. Shared humanity.

FRUSTRATION WITH A SYSTEM ≠ BLAME FOR A PERSON
Most immigrants you meet at work are individuals with their own reasons for being there often to work, contribute, support their families and build a future.”
Your foreign colleague is a person, not a symbol of every problem in society.

Concerns about jobs, wages, housing or public services can be real topics for public discussion.

But the colleague working beside you didn't personally create all of those problems.

They may simply be doing what many people everywhere are trying to do: work, contribute, support their family and build a future.

We can discuss difficult issues without losing compassion for individual people.

**Disagree with policies if you wish. Don't dehumanise people.**

What helps people from different backgrounds build genuine trust at work?

To every immigrant building a life and career away from home:

Your accent does not determine your intelligence.

Being unfamiliar with a system does not make you incompetent.

And needing time to understand a new workplace culture does not make you less capable.

Learn. Ask questions. Build relationships. Keep growing.

And if you experience a genuine pattern of unfair treatment, document it and seek support through the appropriate channels.

**Moving countries may change your environment. It doesn't erase your value.**

For those who have worked abroad: what is ONE lesson you wish someone had told you when you first arrived?

MANAGERS NEED TO HEAR THIS
Psychological safety matters.
A diverse workforce doesn't automatically become an inclusive workforce.

Leadership matters.

When employees feel unable to ask questions, raise concerns or discuss cultural misunderstandings safely, small tensions can become bigger problems.

Good leadership doesn't pretend differences don't exist. It creates an environment where differences can be understood without discrimination or humiliation.

**Unity at work is built, not assumed.**

Managers and employees: what is ONE thing you've seen a good leader do that made everyone feel respected?

Sometimes what we call “attitude” is actually anxiety.

The quiet immigrant colleague may not be rude.
The colleague asking many questions may not be incompetent.
The person working exceptionally hard may not be trying to impress anyone.

Sometimes, they are simply adjusting to a new culture, learning a new system, trying to do their job well or worried about getting something wrong.

And someone staying close to people from their own background may simply be looking for familiarity and emotional safety in an unfamiliar environment.

Of course, we shouldn't assume every behaviour has the same explanation. But perhaps we should become more curious before becoming judgemental.

When we understand the story behind behaviour, compassion becomes easier.

💬 Have you ever misunderstood someone at work, only to understand them differently once you knew their story?
