🌒 Don’t sneak a peek - it’s not worth it.

A partial solar eclipse will be visible across the UK this evening, and it can be very tempting to take a quick look.

Please don’t.

Looking directly at the Sun, even during an eclipse, can cause permanent damage to the retina - and the damage can occur without pain at the time.

Ordinary sunglasses are not safe for viewing an eclipse, no matter how dark or expensive they are. If you want to look directly, only use genuine solar eclipse glasses or viewers that meet ISO 12312-2 safety standards.

No proper eclipse glasses? Enjoy it indirectly instead - a simple pinhole viewer is a safe option.

Enjoy the spectacle, but protect your sight. 👁️🌒

On the bright side, the lenses are sparkling.

If cleaning your lenses does not improve the view, it may be worth checking when your next eye examination is due. Follow the interval recommended by your optometrist.

Summer eye-care reminder: contact lenses and water do not mix 💧👁️

Swimming pools, hot tubs, the sea and even shower water can expose contact lenses to microorganisms that may cause serious eye infections. The safest approach is to remove your lenses before swimming, showering or using a hot tub, and never rinse lenses or their case with tap water.

If you need clear vision in the water, ask your optometrist about prescription swimming goggles or other suitable options.

If an eye becomes red, painful, sensitive to light or your vision blurs, remove the lenses and seek urgent professional advice.

Your iris is far more than just your eye colour 👁️

The iris is the coloured ring surrounding the pupil, and it works a little like the aperture of a camera. In bright conditions, it makes the pupil smaller. In darker conditions, it allows the pupil to widen so more light can enter the eye.

The amount and distribution of pigment within the iris help determine whether your eyes appear blue, green, hazel or brown. Its intricate pattern is also highly distinctive to each person.

Your iris may be small, but it plays a major role in helping you see comfortably in changing light.
