🛡️ CHILD SAFETY WEEK – KEEPING BABY SAFE 💚

❓ Would you know which baby products are safe for sleep?

Buying for a new baby is exciting, but not all products sold for babies are safe or recommended for sleep.

😴 Remember:
✅ EASY TO BREATHE = SAFE TO SLEEP
⚠️ CHIN-TO-CHEST IS NOT SAFE

✅ DO:
✔ Place your baby on their BACK for every sleep
✔ Keep your baby's FEET at the FOOT of the cot
✔ Use a firm, flat mattress
✔ Keep the cot CLEAR of toys, pillows, bumpers and loose bedding
✔ Use a suitable baby sleep bag or cellular blanket
✔ Follow manufacturer instructions
✔ Ask your Midwife or Health Visitor if unsure

❌ DO NOT:
✘ Allow your baby to sleep in a CHIN-TO-CHEST position
✘ Use inclined sleepers, sleep nests, pods or positioners
✘ Put pillows, duvets, bumpers or soft toys in the cot
✘ Assume all products sold online are safe for sleep

🚗 CAR SEATS
✅ Use the correct car seat for travel
✅ Take regular breaks on longer journeys
✅ Remove baby from the car seat when you arrive

❌ Do NOT use a car seat as a routine sleep space
❌ Do NOT leave a sleeping baby in a car seat for long periods
❌ Do NOT use bulky coats, snowsuits or hats in the car seat

🪑 BOUNCERS & SWINGS
✅ Only use when baby is awake and supervised

❌ Do NOT allow babies to sleep in bouncers, swings or rockers
❌ Do NOT leave a sleeping baby where their head may fall forward

🚨 The parents in these real stories never thought their child would fall from an open window. Could it happen in your home? 🪟💔

💔 "It only takes a moment." The parents never expected it to happen to their child.

The window was only open for fresh air.
The furniture was only near the window temporarily.
The child was only left alone for a moment.
Sadly, for some families, that was all it took.

🚑 According to the Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT), one child is admitted to hospital every day after falling from a building, often from an open window or balcony.

Young children are naturally curious and often climb before parents realise they can. Their head is also heavier in comparison to their body and they can easily topple out of the window.

✅ DO:
✔ Fit window restrictors or safety catches
✔ Keep beds, sofas, toy boxes and furniture away from windows
✔ Lock balcony doors when not in use
✔ Supervise young children around open windows
✔ Check window restrictors are working properly

❌ DO NOT:
✘ Leave a child alone in a room with an open window
✘ Assume your child cannot climb
✘ Place furniture underneath windows
✘ Disable or stop using window restrictors
✘ Leave older children in charge of younger children near windows
✘ Rely on insect screens to prevent falls

❓❓Button Batteries - Where are yours❓❓

✔️ Look around your home for button batteries - found in toys, remotes, gadgets and any new packets.
✔️ Store spares and used batteries safely and out of reach of children.
✔️ Dispose of used or “flat” batteries straight away. Even “flat” ones can still cause serious harm - use the battery bins at your local supermarket.
✔️ Check that battery compartments are secure and that no batteries have fallen out.
🔺 If you suspect a child may have ingested a battery, take child straight to A&E even if they are not showing any symptoms and do not give anything to eat or drink.
