If your child isn't talking yet and you're currently on a waiting list for speech and language therapy, there are simple things you can do at home to support their communication. 💬

Here are my top 3 tips:
1️⃣ Use visuals to support understanding – real objects, photos, gestures and simple signs can help your child understand what is happening and the language around your daily routines.

2️⃣ Offer choices using real objects – hold up two items (e.g. a banana and an apple) and encourage your child to choose.
Offer choices throughout the day as much as possible.

3️⃣ Create opportunities for communication – pause during favourite activities, put desired items slightly out of reach, or wait expectantly to give your child a reason to communicate.

Remember, communication isn't just about words. Every gesture, look, sign, sound or attempt to interact is communication!

Starting nursery or primary school is a big milestone, and strong communication skills can help children feel confident, make friends, and settle into new routines. 💗💜💚

Our Speech and Language Therapy top tips offer simple ways to support your child's language, listening, social interaction, and independence skills at home before September. Small everyday conversations can make a big difference!

Which tip will you be trying first? 👇

❓️❓️Reducing questions and increasing comments can help support language development by lowering communication pressure and providing stronger language models.

😀 Instead of frequently asking a child questions, therapists and caregivers make descriptive comments about what the child is doing, seeing, or feeling.

✅️This approach encourages more spontaneous communication, keeps interactions natural, and gives the child opportunities to participate without feeling tested or required to respond correctly.

⚠️The power of a pause ⚠️
A simple pause can make a big difference!

It gives your child
✅️ extra processing time
✅️encourages them to listen, think, anticipate, and communicate.

Pauses can help develop
✅️attention,
✅️ understanding,
✅️turn-taking,
✅️vocabulary,
✅️sentence building,
✅️and confidence!

While singing Old MacDonald Had a farm.... pause before the animal name, children are encouraged to fill in the gap: "Old MacDonald had a... 🐄".

When reading That's Not My... books, pausing before the key word allows your child to predict and participate: "That's not my teddy, its ears are too...".

😀These opportunities create meaningful moments for children to practise communication in a fun, low-pressure way.

Starting school is an exciting milestone, and children develop speech skills at different rates. By the time children begin school, unfamiliar adults should be able to understand most of what they say. If your child’s speech is often difficult to understand, they may benefit from extra support with their speech sounds and clarity. Now is the perfect time to get started and get any concerns checked out 😃

🌟Two simple strategies that can make a big difference are reducing questions and modelling language🌟
✅️ Instead of asking lots of questions like “What’s that?” or “Can you say ball?”, adults can comment on what the child is doing and provide simple language models such as “Big ball!” or “You’re building a tower.”
😃This helps reduce pressure on the child and gives them clear examples of language they can copy and learn from naturally during play and everyday routines.
