After an incredible 32 years of service, today we say goodbye to our Assistant Chief Nurse for R&I, Janette Dunkerley, as she begins her well-earned retirement.

🏥 For 27 of those years, Janette has dedicated herself to research, playing a significant role in shaping R&I at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and supporting clinical research and researchers locally, regionally and nationally.

Yesterday, colleagues came together to celebrate Janette and her remarkable career, sharing just how much her support, friendship, clinical expertise and unwavering commitment to R&I, colleagues and patients have meant to so many over the years.

Thank you to Janette, and we wish you every happiness as you begin this exciting new chapter 💙.

🛀 Researchers at Manchester Metropolitan University are investigating if a regular soak in a hot bath could help to improve peripheral artery disease (PAD), a common painful circulatory condition, which affects one in five people over the age of 60 in the UK, to some degree.

PAD is a condition where the arteries carrying blood from the heart are narrowed by a build-up of fatty material. It usually affects arteries in the legs, causing leg pain when walking even short distances.

🦵 The British Heart Foundation funded HEATPAD (HEAT Therapy for Peripheral Artery Disease), study is recruiting people aged 18 and over, who have PAD and intermittent claudication (a painful ache in their legs when they walk, which usually disappears after a few minutes' rest) and have received treatment at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

Survivors of major trauma can achieve a remarkable rate of recovery when given the right support, according to a new study examining a pioneering rehabilitation programme developed in response to the needs arising from the Manchester Arena bombing.

Researchers from Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT), the The University of Manchester, University of Salford and Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust, found that participants experienced substantial improvements in physical recovery, confidence, fitness, mental wellbeing and overall quality of life.

🗞️ Published in the journal "Physiotherapy", the study evaluated the Enhanced Rehabilitation Programme (ERP), a specialist multidisciplinary rehabilitation service established following the 2017 Manchester Arena attack and identified several important lessons for the future of trauma rehabilitation.

📺 Study lead Professor Jason Wong, Consultant Trauma Surgeon at MFT, appeared on BBC North West Tonight on Friday 16 October, alongside Manchester Arena attack survivor Paul Price, who took part in the study.

🗣️ Together they discussed the value of the novel approach of the research, which moved focus from coping with injury to actively “training like an athlete”, pursuing future goals and aspirations.

📺 Thank you to reporter Anna Youssef and ITV Granada Reports for their excellent piece on research taking place at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT), that is identifying people at risk of heart failure before they develop symptoms.

The report featured Professor Chris Miller, Consultant Cardiologist at MFT who leads the EARLY-HF study and study participant Pete O'Brien, one of nine per cent of participants who only learned they had previously had a heart attack, through taking part in the study.

🗣️ Discussing the British Heart Foundation funded research Professor Miller explained the importance of prevention so that people like Pete can receive appropriate treatment before their condition becomes more serious.

What an incredible day of collaboration at Citylabs 1.0!

We were thrilled to bring together more than 100 people from Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT), ABHI, and our local ecosystem partners to explore the future of healthcare.

💡 Key highlights from the day:
𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: We opened with a powerful keynote from Sohail Munshi (Joint Chief Medical Officer, MFT) on our shared strategic priorities.

𝗖𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴-𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆: Lukas Hughes-Noehrer showcased how MFT is transitioning from reactive to proactive care using data and wearables.

𝗘𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: We explored how MFT can help generate essential evidence for HealthTech development with Annie Yarwood PhD and the NIHR HealthTech Research Centre in Emergency and Acute Care, and examined a real‑world adoption case study through the iTap programme with Aqsa Siddiqui.

The heart of the event was our showcase carousel in the atrium. It was fantastic to see ABHI members engaging directly with MFT’s specialist teams across:
- Clinical trials and real-world evidence
- Data, digital and wearables
- Innovation adoption and procurement
- Office and lab space

🌐 Strengthening the ecosystem
By connecting with industry, innovators and academic partners, we are fostering the relationships needed to meet the goals of the NHS 10 Year Health Plan.
