Summer can be a great time to book eye exams for the whole family ☀️👓
With the routine of school and activities paused for a while, the holidays often give us parents a chance to organise the things that are harder to fit in during term time, including eye tests for children.

Children do not always realise when their vision has changed, and symptoms can sometimes be missed or mistaken for tiredness, lack of concentration or simply needing to sit closer to screens.
An eye examination can help check:
• Vision and prescription changes
• Eye health
• Eye coordination and focusing
• Visual development

We aim to make children feel relaxed and comfortable during their appointments, book in for the whole family at once - we have plenty space for all of you!

Hay fever season can be miserable for your eyes as well as your nose 🤧🌿
If your eyes are feeling itchy, watery, sore or irritated at the moment, pollen could be the cause.

A few simple things that may help:
• Wearing sunglasses outdoors to reduce pollen exposure
• Using cold compresses to soothe irritated eyes
• Avoiding rubbing your eyes
• Keeping windows closed on high pollen days
• Using lubricating eye drops to help flush away allergens

If your symptoms are ongoing or uncomfortable, our team can also advise on eye drops suitable for hay fever sufferers, including options for contact lens wearers.

Sunglasses should do more than just look good ☀️🕶️
Good quality sunglasses help protect your eyes from UV exposure while also making bright days more comfortable, reducing glare and helping many people see more clearly outdoors.

We are seeing more patients choosing prescription sunglasses too, especially for driving, holidays, walking the dog and spending more time outside during the summer months.

A few things worth looking for when choosing sunglasses:
• Full UV protection (look out for the CE Mark)
• A comfortable fit with good coverage (bigger is better!)
• Polarised lenses to reduce glare
• Lenses suited to your lifestyle and prescription (check out our sports frames)

And don’t forget, children’s eyes need protection from the sun too. Their pupils actually let in more light so wearing sunglasses and a hat is incredibly important for younger ones.

☀️Sun Awareness Week (11-17 May) is a good reminder that sunglasses aren’t just a style choice, they’re eye protection.

When choosing a pair, look for lenses with full UV400 protection. This blocks 100% of harmful UVA and UVB rays, helping to reduce the risk of long term damage to your eyes.

Size matters more than people think. Larger frames or styles with good coverage help limit the amount of light reaching the eyes from the sides, as well as protecting the delicate skin around the eyes.

At McLeish Eyecare, we stock a wide range of high quality sunglasses that combine proper protection with frames you’ll actually enjoy wearing. We have frames designed especially for sport too.
