Meet our new optometrist, Caitlin Redden

This week, we are delighted to welcome Caitlin to the McLeish Eyecare team.

Originally from Aberdeenshire, Caitlin qualified as an optometrist in 2021 before spending four years working in a busy Edinburgh city centre practice. Although Aberdeenshire will always feel like home, the Lothians have long been the place she hoped to build her career, having worked in the city as a student while studying for her degree.

Optometry runs in Caitlin's family, with her being the third generation of optometrist. Following in the footsteps of her mother and grandfather, with an aunt who was also an optometrist and an uncle who owned his own practice, eye care has always been close to home. It offered her the perfect combination of science, problem solving and working closely with people.

Building relationships with patients is one of the most rewarding parts of Caitlin's job. She enjoys getting to know people, helping them achieve the best possible vision, and supporting them in maintaining healthy eyes throughout their lives. She believes every patient deserves to feel listened to and cared for, and always strives to provide a high standard of personalised care.

Clinically, Caitlin has a particular interest in acute eye care, diagnosing and managing urgent eye conditions, as well as fitting soft multifocal contact lenses, where finding the right solution can make a real difference to a patient's quality of life. She is also currently completing her Independent Prescribing qualification and is due to qualify later this year.

Outside of work, you'll often find Caitlin at the gym or out running. Trips back to Aberdeenshire are usually spent riding horses with her family, and she also enjoys cooking.

We are delighted to have Caitlin as part of the McLeish Eyecare team and know our patients will appreciate her friendly approach, clinical expertise and genuine passion for helping people look after their sight.

We're accepting new patients, so feel free to pop in to book an appointment, or head to our website mcleisheyecare.co.uk.

Back to school
We're not sure how the school holidays have flown by so quickly! This is usually the time parents and carers are busy getting new school shoes, topping up pencil cases, and labelling everything in sight. One other thing to add to the list...an eye examination! So often children can't explain that they aren't seeing well and the signs are often hard to spot, but if spotted, visual issues can often be reversed with early treatment so please do make sure your child sees their optician at least every two years from around age four.

And unlike new shoes, you won't have to pay a penny!

You can book in online here mcleisheyecare.co.uk. New patients very welcome.

A trip to the beach can be great fun, until sand gets in your eye 🌊☀️
Although it is very common, rubbing the eye can quickly make things worse, as tiny grains of sand may scratch the surface of the eye and cause irritation.

If sand gets into your eye:
• Try not to rub it
• Blink several times to encourage natural tears to wash it out
• Rinse the eye gently with clean water or sterile saline
• Remove contact lenses if you wear them
• Use lubricating eye drops to help soothe irritation

If discomfort continues, your eye becomes very red, sensitive to light, painful or your vision is affected, it is important to have it checked.

Children can be particularly prone to rubbing their eyes after sand gets in them, so gentle reassurance and rinsing the eye as soon as possible can really help.

We hope everyone enjoys the sunshine safely this summer ☀️

Summer can be a great time to book eye exams for the whole family ☀️👓
With the routine of school and activities paused for a while, the holidays often give us parents a chance to organise the things that are harder to fit in during term time, including eye tests for children.

Children do not always realise when their vision has changed, and symptoms can sometimes be missed or mistaken for tiredness, lack of concentration or simply needing to sit closer to screens.
An eye examination can help check:
• Vision and prescription changes
• Eye health
• Eye coordination and focusing
• Visual development

We aim to make children feel relaxed and comfortable during their appointments, book in for the whole family at once - we have plenty space for all of you!

To book an appointment for your child or the whole family this summer, please get in touch with the practice or book online.
