Delivering Together: Mobilising the UK Supply Chain for SMR ⚛️

Paul Waring joined suppliers from across the UK yesterday to hear how Great British Energy Nuclear and Rolls-Royce SMR plan to mobilise the supply chain to support delivery of the UK’s first Small Modular Reactors.

The scale of the opportunity is significant.

A successful UK SMR programme has the potential to create long-term opportunities for British manufacturers, support high-value jobs and develop a nuclear supply chain capable of competing on a global stage.

But one message particularly resonated with us:
It will take time.

For SMEs, the important question is understanding when programme requirements will reach our part of the supply chain.

That visibility matters. It enables manufacturers to plan ahead and make informed investment decisions around people, skills, equipment, qualified capacity and manufacturing readiness.

Stronger UK Defence Supply Chains Need Long-Term Visibility
Pat Garth attended the DPRTE UK Defence Procurement & Supply Chain Summit in Manchester, joining SMEs, mid-tier suppliers and wider industry to discuss the future of the UK defence supply chain.

One message came through particularly strongly.

If UK manufacturers are expected to invest, grow capacity and deliver at pace, they need reliable information, long-term planning and greater visibility of future programme requirements.

That certainty gives SMEs the confidence to invest in the people, skills, equipment and manufacturing capacity needed to support the sector.

And, in true Pat style, she was the first to put a question to the panel, although certainly not the last!

The wider ambition is clear: buy British, support the re-industrialisation of UK manufacturing and create a more integrated domestic supply chain capable of responding to increasing defence requirements.

For GEL, this aligns closely with our focus on manufacturing readiness, qualified capacity and long-term programme resilience.

From ambition to delivery: preparing the UK nuclear supply chain for what comes next.

Following the second Nuclear Supply Chain Summit in Derby, one message came through strongly: the opportunity for the UK nuclear supply chain is significant, but manufacturing readiness will be critical to turning future programmes into successful delivery.

For Graham Engineering Ltd, the discussions around capacity, repeatability, standardisation, skills and long-term supplier investment were particularly relevant.

Supporting nuclear programmes requires more than manufacturing capacity alone. It requires the engineering capability, quality culture, traceability and manufacturing discipline needed to operate successfully within a highly regulated, safety-critical environment.

As Paul Waring, reflected following the event:

"The opportunity for UK manufacturing is significant, but suppliers need the visibility and confidence to invest ahead of demand. Celebrating 49 Years of Dedication

Today, we celebrate an incredible milestone as Mick Hubbert begins his well-earned retirement after 49 years of service at Graham Engineering Ltd.

Over nearly five decades, Mick has been a familiar face, a trusted colleague and a valued source of knowledge and experience. During that time, he has witnessed significant changes across the business and the wider engineering industry while remaining a constant presence and a highly respected member of the Graham Engineering team.

His commitment, professionalism and willingness to support others have left a lasting impact on generations of colleagues. Whether sharing his knowledge, offering practical advice or entertaining the office with one of his many memorable "Mickisms", he has played an important role in shaping the culture that makes Graham Engineering what it is today.
