OK, this is a little mini-series I’ve been wanting to create for a while now: self-care tools I use throughout the month to support my nervous system - which, in turn, can help me manage my PMS.
PMS isn’t just caused by “low hormones”. Instead, some of us seem to be particularly sensitive to the normal fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone that happen after ovulation and, especially, as these hormones fall in the days leading up to our period. These hormonal shifts interact with your brain and nervous system, influencing things like mood, emotional regulation and how we respond to stress.
Higher levels of stress are associated with more severe premenstrual symptoms, so when life is already asking a lot of you, that premenstrual window can sometimes feel even louder.
Incomes symptoms such as: anxiety, overwhelm, irritability, feeling prickly, or the deep offence of someone breathing beside you….
Anyways, one of the tools I use monthly is embodied movement- and this really just means not attaching a particular shape or intention to the movements, just allowing your body to flow, breath, not forcing just being and alongside a cracking playlist this can feel like a really beautiful way to unfold and reduce stress aka reducing pms. So find a cosy spot- put your headphones in, bring a mat and pillows- make a cosy nest…reduce any distractions and just start to notice your breath, notice the movements and sensations - maybe this is slow…maybe its a full body shake, a sigh, a SCREAM or just stillness…
