This week is World Breastfeeding Week and the theme this year is “Breastfeeding for a sustainable start in life: strengthen what works”.

At BFN&N we are proud to be a part of what works in ensuring the families we see are supported with evidenced based information, warmth and compassionate listening, skilled assistance to reach their feeding goals and non judgemental support of the choices that are right for each diad and their family.

This week we celebrate all breast/chestfeeding families in their varied and wonderful forms and hold space for those who are navigating the grief that comes with a feeding journey that didn’t look as they hoped or ended before they wanted it to.

We also recognise the work yet needed to make breast/chestfeeding accessible to everyone including: free skilled support that is readily available and easy to access from pregnancy through to ending breastfeeding, stronger legal and ethical regulation around the marketing of breastmilk substitutes, sufficient maternity and paternity leave, and legal frameworks that genuinely require employers to support breast/chestfeeding parents as they return to work and for as long as they choose to feed their infant.

We are honoured to be a small part of the “Warm Chain of Support” for breast/chestfeeding families in Norfolk 💛

We would love to hear who you’re celebrating this World Breastfeeding Week 💛

Jennah, a post graduate researcher at Bournemouth University within the Centre for Midwifery and Women's Health is embarking on research focussing on dysphoric milk ejection reflex (D-MER), a breastfeeding condition that causes intense negative emotions before or during milk ejection (ethics approval ID: 69167). Lack of awareness of D-MER has resulted in misdiagnosis with postnatal depression, early breastfeeding cessation and lower maternal self-efficacy.

"I experienced D-MER while breastfeeding both my first child back in 2014 and again, with my son in 2019 experiencing the condition for a total of 48 months and previously wrote about this in a blog for the Association of Breastfeeding Mothers and more recently, in the Journal of Human Lactation. These experiences inspired my research with the aim of improving understanding and raising awareness of D-MER for those affected.

My current study is the first to investigate whether there is a relationship between stress and the emotional experience of the human milk ejection reflex by exploring the underlying hormonal mechanisms. The study includes both those who experience D-MER and those who do not, allowing a better understanding of the full range of milk ejection emotional experiences.

The study is open to participants across the UK and can be completed entirely from home."

Hi NORFOLK & NORWICH Breastfeeding Counsellors and Breastfeeding Peer Supporters

We are a little short of volunteers for our Friday breastfeeding group over the summer holidays. We are looking for any ABM Peer Supporters or Breastfeeding Counsellors who might be able to help.

If there is a Friday you can volunteer, we would really appreciate it if you could fill in this form and include your phone number (or email if you prefer)
https://form.jotform.com/261965362995070

You can find more information about our clinics on our website: www.breastfeedingsupportnorwich.com

Any help, even if it is just one Friday, would make a real difference.

Thank you so much

Take it from a mum who has been there, beyond exhausted, broken, desperate for rest and to do the right thing by my baby. And then feeling like an utter failure when I couldn't get my baby to do what the book/app said they should.

If it's working for you, happy days, crack on.

But if you're feeling stressed by it, controlled by it, obsessed with it...if sleep isn't changing, or your baby is miserable....if you're spending hours trying to get your baby to sleep and they're struggling...it's not working for you.

It's ok not to follow wake windows if you don't want to.
We didn't for thousands of years.
The over saturation of information now the Internet exists, and our (understandable) need to maximise sleep, means a lot of ideas around sleep have become rigid, unmanageable and stressful.

A consistent wake up time and bedtime can be helpful (past the newborn stage) but other than that naps can actually be a lot more flexible that we often think.
Some babies work well with a rough pattern, but a lot really don't.

Not trying to make you feel uncomfortable, but perhaps just make you double check if there might be a different, less stressful way....

I know you're knackered, and want to make sure your baby is ok, so I'm here to say it's ok to do it a different way if you need to x
