Come and join Susanne Ahlund and Emily Cary at Jarrolds next week where we are guest speakers for a Skin and Menopause talk. The skin is the largest organ in the human body and hormonal shifts can have a big impact on it. This will be an informative event with Clarins on hand to give some pampering too. Bring along any questions you have. Hope to see you there!

In this video Emily discusses anxiety as a very common but often an overlooked symptom of early Perimenopause.

If anxiety is appropriately recognised as having a hormonal basis it is much easier to give appropriate advice and support. Antidepressants aren’t always the answer, alternative support may be more effective with fewer side effects.

Do listen if this is something you might recognise.

Are you feeling irrational? Emily had an amazing description from a woman in clinic today about how this felt for her.

At the same time as craving touch and comfort from her husband she also couldn’t bear him anywhere near her. This kind of contradiction is not that unusual and it’s your brain responding to the hormonal fluctuation of perimenopause.

Have a listen and see if this resonates with you!

Are you itchy and bitchy? Thought that would grab your attention!!

I’ve never heard this phrase before, but I’ll always remember it. It was given to me by a lady in clinic today! Itching is a really common per menopausal symptom, as is mood irritability at this time of hormonal turmoil.

Have a listen if this affects you.

How long can I use the Mirena coil as part of HRT?

This is a common area of confusion that Emily tries to clear up in this video.

Whilst the Mirena can be used as a contraceptive for 8 years (or even 10 if it is fitted after the age of 45) it is only licensed to protect the lining of the womb as part of HRT for 4 YEARS, though this can be extended to 5 YEARS, if there is no bleeding.

We often see women who are confused about this, and it is important to know the difference to keep your HRT safe.

Don’t let this put you off the Mirena, it’s a great way to have the progestogen component of your HRT particularly if you are having troublesome bleeding or need contraception.

Emily reflects in this video on how lifestyle measures and HRT can work together to support women through menopause.

HRT isn’t right for everyone — and even when it is an option, optimising lifestyle factors such as nutrition, exercise, stress, sleep, and relationships plays a vital role in symptom relief and long-term health.

For women who can and choose to use HRT, it can often bring troublesome symptoms down to a manageable level, creating the space to use both hormonal and non-hormonal support hand-in-hand.

We’d love to hear from you — what has your experience been?

Don’t let a previous uncomfy smear stop you having a repeat or going for your recall. But do think about vaginal oestogen - this very low dose treatment can make all the difference. And has huge longterm benefits to the whole of the ge***al and urinary tract.

It is incredibly safe and effective, and in the UK we just don’t talk about it enough. We should all think about it from perimenoapuse, and see it as a life long treatment to protect our health. There are lots of different preparations and it can be used by almost everyone, even those who have been told they can’t have systemic (whole body) Hrt.

If you have benefited don’t keep it to yourself, spread the word!
