Why do we put on weight during peri-menopause?
One of the most common problems I hear from my peri-menopause clients is gaining weight around the tummy, that just won't budge! Do you find that you're putting on tummy fat, and no amount of cardio, going to the gym or restricting your food seems to make a difference. But why is this?
One of the key reasons is the hormone insulin, and how your body starts responding to it differently during peri menopause. Around this time, due to the shifts in hormones, we can become increasingly insulin resistant. This means we need to release higher and higher levels of insulin, just to get a reaction from our cells. The problem is that these higher levels of insulin are a trigger for increased fat storage, especially around our tummy.
That’s why we need to have a shift in our macronutrients at peri menopause. That’s the carbs, fat and protein balance. Lower carb eating tends to work for many women – but notice I said lower carb, NOT no carb! I recommend favouring only fibre rich wholegrains, and give up all white and refined carbohydrates. And you may need to have some meals without any starchy carbs at all.
