Friday Care Tip: The 10-Minute Rule for Phone & Message Scams
Scammers often create a sense of urgency to pressure people into making quick decisions. The 10-Minute Rule is a simple but effective way to protect yourself.
How it works:
🔹 Pause and don't act immediately
Scammers may claim your bank account has been compromised, you owe money, or immediate action is required. Their goal is to make you panic and respond without thinking.
🔹 Wait at least 10 minutes
After ending the call, give yourself time before taking any action. This helps you think clearly and can also prevent certain scam tactics where fraudsters attempt to keep the phone line open after you hang up.
🔹 Verify independently
If you're concerned, contact the organisation directly using a trusted phone number from their official website, bank card, or correspondence. Never use contact details provided by the caller or in a suspicious message.
🔹 Report suspicious activity
If you receive a suspicious text, report it to your mobile network provider (in the UK, you can forward scam texts to 7726). If you believe you've been targeted by a scam, report it to Action Fraud.
Remember: Genuine organisations will understand if you take time to verify a request. When in doubt, stop, wait, and check.

Older adults are frequent targets for doorstep scams and rogue traders. Uninvited cold callers cost victims an average of £171 per interaction, and con artists successfully scam an average of 4 older people in England and Wales every minute. Over 2.8 million over-50s now fear opening their own front doors due to the high volume of scams. (Age UK)
Last month we gave away another 5000+ of our Do Not Knock door stickers. Since 2019. over 300,000 have been requested.
If you are aware of an older person who may like one, please email to info@ablecommunitycare.,com (No addresses are contacted again and addresses are not passed on)

The Friday Care Tip 5th June 2026
Care Needs Assessments – How to Approach Them
If you or someone you care for may need support, you can request a care needs assessment from Social Services. It does not matter whether care would be council funded or privately paid — if you ask for an assessment, Social Services have a legal duty to carry one out.
Preparing properly can help ensure the right level of support is identified.
Before the assessment, gather any helpful documents, such as:
• Hospital discharge summaries
• Medication lists
• Reports from professionals such as GPs, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, or other specialists
It can also help to keep a simple daily diary showing where difficulties arise. For example:
• Preparing meals
• Personal care
• Mobility around the home
• Taking medication
• Forgetting important tasks or appointments
Think about what support could make daily life safer, easier, and more manageable.
A care assessment is not just about answering questions — you can ask questions too. For example:
• How will care be provided?
• Can I choose my care provider?
• Can I receive direct payments to arrange my own care?
• What costs are involved and is financial help available?
• Can I have a copy of the assessment?
• How often will my care needs be reviewed?
• What happens if my health suddenly changes?
One of the most important things is to be honest about your struggles. Many people say, “I can manage that,” even when they are finding things difficult. Being truthful helps ensure the right support is put in place to maintain safety, independence, and wellbeing.
For more detailed guidance, Age UK provide an excellent online factsheet called “Care Needs Assessment Guide”, which explains the assessment process, eligibility, and what support may be available.

"Why We Still Send Printed Information Packs"
In a digital world, sometimes a simple letter still means the most.
Since 1980, we've been helping people across the UK remain independent in the comfort of their own homes through professional live-in care. From busy cities to the most rural and remote communities, our support is available wherever it's needed.
While many organisations have moved entirely online, we know that not everyone wants to browse websites or complete forms on a screen. That's why we still offer a traditional information pack, complete with a stamped addressed envelope and application form.
For many older people, there's comfort in holding something tangible, reading at their own pace, making notes, and discussing options with family and friends around the kitchen table.
Because good care starts with making information accessible in the way that works best for you.
If you'd like to receive one of our information packs, we'd be delighted to send one.

The Friday Care Tip 22nd May
The Hidden Cost of Incontinence Care: A UK Postcode Lottery
An estimated 14 million people in the UK are living with incontinence, yet many families assume that essential continence products will automatically be provided free of charge by the NHS. The reality is very different.
While the government provides guidance, it is local Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) that decide what products are available and how many can be supplied. In practice, this means access often depends on where you live — a true postcode lottery.
For example:
• One NHS Foundation Trust limits supply to 3 pads per 24 hours
• Another allows 4 pads plus 1 pull-up product per day
• Some Trusts do not provide pull-up products at all
Any additional products must usually be paid for by the individual or their family.
What To Do If a Family Member Needs Continence Products
Step 1: Speak to your GP
Your GP can explain what continence services and products are available locally through the NHS.
Step 2: Request a Continence Assessment
This can usually be arranged through your GP or carried out by a district nurse if one is already involved in care. Products cannot normally be prescribed without an assessment.
Step 3: Understand NHS Eligibility
People with mild incontinence are generally not eligible for NHS continence products.
Step 4: Check Whether You Can Reclaim VAT
If products are bought privately, some people may be able to reclaim VAT if they receive benefits such as:
• Attendance Allowance
• Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
• Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
There are charities and support organisations which offer further advice and information for families navigating continence care. Simply Google for information about ‘continence support’.
