We’ve deliberately waited until the Courts have sentenced the Hull funeral director to 20 years in prison before writing anything publicly.

First and foremost, our thoughts are with the families who have been affected by the tragic events in Hull. No sentence, and no words, can ever undo the pain and heartbreak they have endured. It is only right that the criminal justice system has held him accountable for his crimes.

Over the past two years, this case has understandably generated significant public concern about the standards families should expect from a funeral director. It is important to recognise that the business involved operated outside the scrutiny and professional oversight of either the National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD) or the National Society of Allied & Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF).

At Gedge and sons we are proud to be members of BOTH! We are regularly inspected and voluntarily regulated under the UK Funeral Director Code, and families also have access to an independent complaints process through SAIF, delivered by an externally audited, Chartered Trading Standards Institute-certified body.

We hope these safeguards provide reassurance that every family who places their trust in us can be confident their loved one will always be treated with dignity, respect and the utmost care.

As always, we will continue to do what we have always done—serve every family with compassion, professionalism and unwavering respect. Thank you to everyone who continues to place their trust in us.

A beautifully sunny day at the Norfolk Bluebell Wood Burial Park, yesterday (thank you to Holly and the team), and I was lucky enough to work with both Paul AND Leanne, from J Gedge & Sons - a joy, as always.

We were saying goodbye to a much-loved father and grandfather who loved motorbikes, word play and his companion Chorkie dog, Max. His family mattered, enormously, to him and they said of him “He had a gift for making ordinary days memorable” often accompanied with the instruction “No telling your mum”. The one word that came up, most often, when his family were talking about him, was FUN!

A lover of ‘scrumping’, he used to say “Everything is edible. Some things, only once” and once fed his toddler granddaughter, what seemed like a pound of blackberries, before handing her back to her mum.

A room full of love, for this valued family and community member. His eulogy concluded with “Everyone knew M. Everyone remembered M and everyone thought he was the best – the best dad, the best grandad, the best neighbour and the best friend.” - And really, there can be no finer tribute than that 😊.

We are wellbeing champion trained by South Norfolk and Broadland Council and find it very helpful when dealing with our local community, clients and sensitive situations. If you are a local business that is involved with the public and feel this would benefit, you can sign up to their free training here.

South Norfolk and Broadland Council are running free mental health awareness training sessions to help create supportive communities as part of our mindful towns and villages project.

Mindful Towns and Villages create safe spaces where people can talk openly about their mental wellbeing.

People from within the community (such as small local businesses, community groups, sports clubs, keen residents) receive basic mental health awareness training to help them feel confident in offering support, listening without judgement, and helping people find further support if needed.

These volunteers are called Wellbeing Champions.

We want to highlight that we do not expect Wellbeing Champions to give any additional time to this role; these conversations will occur naturally as part of daily life. Additionally, we do not expect Wellbeing Champions to take on the role of a counsellor or diagnose any conditions. They are simply there for a low-level chat and to signpost as needed.

The details of our next course are:

Title: Mental Health Awareness in the Community
Provider: South Norfolk and Broadland Council
Date: 21st July
Time: 6-8pm (please arrive 10 minutes early)
Location: St Faiths Crematorium

Mental Health Awareness in the Community Training

The training is 2 hours long with a break, and offers basic education about stress, different mental health conditions, why people may struggle and signs you may notice when someone is having a hard time. You will also learn how you might approach someone and start a conversation. Finally, you will learn about the Council's Help Hub and other services that can offer support so you can effectively signpost. You will receive access to a private area on the Council's website with further supporting website links and a supporting resource to use when having conversations.

If you are interested in booking a place, you can use the following booking link: https://eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fforms.office.com%2Fe%2FtQasbwdFn9&data=05%7C02%7CDavid.Jarmy%40dignityfunerals.onmicrosoft.com%7Cc546471cc5fa4292820d08dedc259959%7C00b4e9a40d6d4a73bd280f2bedc8a91c%7C0%7C0%7C639190251732114879%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=vMcyAlrVCtI%2FBPCxJTyF3WWM1s4KDRfwvgv57mg%2Fnvw%3D&reserved=0

Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers watching over us from heaven.

Today, we celebrate the love, wisdom, strength, and memories you left behind. Though you are no longer here to share this day with us, your presence is felt in the lessons you taught, the values you instilled, and the love that continues to guide us every day.

Not a day goes by that you aren’t missed. We cherish the moments we shared and hold them close to our hearts. Your legacy lives on through the lives you’ve touched and the family you loved so deeply.

Sending love to Heaven today and always. ❤️

Forever remembered, forever loved, forever missed. Happy Father’s Day.

We welcome the decision from the ASA to ban the recent TV advert promoting direct cremation services, which was found to be misleading.

At a time when families are making some of the most important decisions of their lives, clear and accurate information is essential. No one should feel pressured into believing there is only one option available to them.

If you are considering a direct cremation, we encourage you to speak with your local independent funeral director before making any decisions. You may find that local providers can offer comparable or lower prices, while ensuring your loved one remains in the care of a trusted local team.

Independent funeral directors can explain all the options available, including direct cremation, traditional funerals, and personalised services, allowing you to choose what is right for your family.

Many families also take comfort in knowing where their loved one is being cared for and having the opportunity, where appropriate, to visit the chapel of rest and say a final goodbye.

A funeral is about choice, dignity, and informed decision-making. We believe every family deserves honest advice and compassionate support.

We are proud to serve our local community 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you have any questions about direct cremation or any other funeral arrangements, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
