They are a few food sources of vitamin D such as oily fish, UV-treated mushrooms, red meat, egg yolks and fortified foods. However most of these foods should be limited due to other impacts on health (such as high levels of saturated fat) so do eat these in moderation, and consider other sources of vitamin d such as supplements and sunlight too.

The NHS recommends everyone considers taking a vitamin D supplement outside of the summer months. In the UK the sun is not strong enough for the body to make vitamin D during autumn and winter. Specialist supplement drops are also recommended from birth for babies and young children.

Walking can be a great way to get in your daily exercise and timing this to be during daylight hours (if you can!) will also help your body make more Vitamin D. As the days and evenings get lighter this should be easier to do around working hours. During darker months try taking a walk during lunch break if you have time.

Our bodies main source of Vitamin D is sunlight, so getting outside as much as possible can help increase our levels. Moving some of your regular daily activities outdoors (like drinking your morning coffee, yoga practice or catching up with friends) is the quickest way to increase time in the sun. In the summer months, avoiding midday sun is best practice to reduce sunburn and heatstroke risks.
