Fun Fact Friday!

Most people think it's the face pillow pressing on their sinuses, or that the massage itself is "moving things around" but it's nothing to do with either of those things.

It's gravity!

At that moment when you're face down on the treatment table, your nose is the furthest thing down.

Your nose is lined with turbinates, which are bony shelves wrapped in tissue packed with blood vessels.

When you're upright, gravity pulls blood down and away from your head. Everything stays open and you breathe easily.

When you lay down, that all changes. Blood moves towards your head because of gravity. The vessels in the turbinates fill up with blood and this causes the tissues to swell and the nasal passages to narrow.

Any existing mucus in your nasal passages also travels downwards because of gravity, causing additional stuffiness!

In summary, you get clogged up when laying face down because your nose is the lowest part of your body at that time!

It's called "positional nasal congestion"

So now you know!

If you want to be treated as an individual, and get a rehab plan tailored specifically to you, your injury and personal lifestyle circumstances, then I can help.

If you don't want to invest in personalised care, stick to Google and AI. You'll eventually need real life intervention when that injury keeps coming back πŸ˜‰

Drop me a message if you need help with a new injury or a persistent, returning ni**le.

As a sports therapist, and a runner, I am increasingly concerned by the messages telling people they need to do more, train harder, race more often, and push through every ache and ni**le.

Week after week, I see the consequences: persistent injuries, burnout, fatigue, and people losing the enjoyment that got them into running in the first place.

The runners who stay healthy, consistent, and active for years aren't usually the ones chasing "more" at every opportunity.

They're the ones who respect recovery, fuel their bodies properly, listen when their body is talking to them, and understand that long-term progress will always beat short-term intensity.

Running should add to your life, not take away from it.

What's the biggest issue you see in running culture right now? Pop in the comments below!

A sports therapist and a personal trainer can both help people move better and improve physical performance, but their training, scope of practice, and goals are quite different.

I've seen a few posts recently where the two seem to have blurred the lines a little bit.

PTs offering rehab assessments & plans, and sports therapists offering gym programmes.

Unless there has been comprehensive, accredited training completed on the additional sides of scope of practice, then this shouldn't be happening.

A weekend course or online module covering the additional respective education is just not acceptable.

There's a reason why the two professions are separate.

I don't write gym programmes for my clients because it's not my area of expertise or qualifications. I write rehab plans.

And PTs should not be writing rehab plans for the exact same reason.

Collaborative working is key.

Make sure you know what your health care professional is technically allowed to be offering you before you commit.

Whilst similar, they have subtle differences, and background elements of training & knowledge base.

If you're not sure, simply ask.

Not all qualifications are created equal.

In an industry which is not regulated (unlike physiotherapy, osteopathy, chiropractor, dietitian) - you can technically call yourself what you like, regardless of what your training & qualifications are!

Before trusting someone with your health, injury, or recovery, it's worth taking 30 seconds to check their credentials.

Are they properly qualified? Are they insured? Do they stay up to date with current evidence and training? Are they working within their scope of practice & training?

A certificate on a wall doesn't always tell the full story. Especially if they are simply endless certificates for passive intervention add-ons.

The right therapist won't be offended if you ask about their qualifications, they'll be proud to show them.

Professional bodies, such as The Sports Therapy Association (STA) act as an independent, non-profit professional body in the United Kingdom representing sports therapists, soft tissue therapists, and injury professionals. It acts to maintain industry standards, support practitioners, and provide ongoing education for musculoskeletal (MSK) clinicians.

Members undergo qualification checks upon joining, and have to evidence annual CPD at renewal, and receive specialist insurance options.

I am a proud member of the STA as I want to be a part of helping to represent & protect our industry.

Your body deserves more than guesswork. It deserves expertise.

My credentials:
L5 Adv Diploma in Sports Therapy
Member of STA
Insured via Balens
EMFAW L3 (First Aid)
16 years experience

I do also hold a BSc (Hons) Sport Science but essentially this gave me the foothold & headstart into Sports Therapy due to the extensive anatomy & physiology studied!
