Just saw this on my news feed. Only the Squash women's No. 1 Hania El Hammamy with cupping marks across her shoulder and arm! Cupping is used alongside acupuncture and there are different types - not all leave marks like this. Often described as 'reverse massage' and great for muscle recovery. I use it on areas where deep needling might be unsafe or it can be used very gently on a particularly tight band of muscle prior to needling. This can help numb the area slightly and make strong needling painless for the patient.

This is interesting because it focuses on patients with chronic lower back pain over 65 year of age. While I find acupuncture consistently good for lower back pain, I do find good results harder to get when patients are over 70 years of age. This trial suggests acupuncture is still a valid choice for the older population but good results were seen after a higher number of initial treatments (12 compared to a typical recommendation of 6-10), plus the possible use of electroacupuncture and regular follow ups.

More 'tennis elbow' last week. Patient pretty frustrated with the pain preventing them doing day to day activities with no improvement for several weeks. Elbow was sore for a couple of days after acupuncture and tuina before pain levels significantly reducing. At 2 week follow up appointment, we wouldn't expect the elbow to be too sore the following day and would expect the elbow to feel mildly achy that evening only.
