Anyone bought up by a narcissist?
A young child was told that milk came from cows. The child saw a cow in a field and went to fetch some milk not realising that it was a bull. The child couldn’t get any milk but returned the next day with a hand full of grass to persuade the bull to give up some milk. The child had been told that cows like grass to eat but that didn’t work. Being persistent the child kept returning to the bull with different treats like hay and flowers but the bull still didn’t give her not even one drop of milk. The bull loved all the attention and treats and selfishly decided not to tell the child he had no milk to give. Eventually after many, many attempts the child began to think that the failure to get milk from the bull was because there was something wrong with them. May be they were bad and they didn’t deserve any milk?
When the child grew into an adult they continued to try to get milk from other deceptive bulls but of course it always lead to failure. The adult felt many mixed feelings including unlovability, unworthiness, failure, frustration and depression. All of those feelings were directed inwardly eventually causing them physical pain.
One day someone told them that bulls don’t make milk. It was hard to hear at first but when it sunk in the frustration led to anger, amplifying the pain. Even though part of them knew they’d been tricked they couldn’t let go off the anger towards the bulls for their deception and now they were angry with themselves for allowing them to be deceived. Everyone had to be punished for their crimes so the pain stayed.
One day they were told that the way to get rid of the pain was with something called forgiveness. This healing type of forgiveness didn’t condone what had been done to them, because it was clearly wrong. This healing forgiveness was going to replace the anger with love and in turn separate themselves from the bulls selfishness and what had happened. It was going to be difficult because it involved letting go of years of anger towards the bulls as well as the inward directed anger toward themselves.
When they were eventually able to replace the anger with love, through this healing forgiveness there was no need for the pain that demanded justice so it left. Love is the only healer.
