Saturday we sweated buckets unpacking. By Sunday we were on the deck watching terns dive-bomb the lake, fish jumping, dogs sprawled out sunbathing like retired millionaires .....

Monday we had my folks over and none of us moved for about three hours. Just the lake, the wildlife, the rosé and the geese causing drama as usual. 🥂🐾

We already know how lucky we are with a home we love, work that genuinely excites us and a beautiful space to do it in. But this little lakeside bolthole has added something else entirely. That slower, quieter connection to nature we didn’t realise we were craving quite so much.

The Lake House. Worth every sweaty unpacking minute. 🏡🌅

Day five in the new Pro-Gen Research office ...

Five days in, and I don’t think the novelty of walking into this office is going to wear off any time soon.

We have a new home at Keswick Hall, and what a home it is. A south-facing room, original features that have been here since the 19th Century, views across the grounds that make it genuinely hard to concentrate sometimes, and two very contented dogs who have already claimed the sofa as their own.

There’s something fitting about a genealogy business working from a building with this much history woven into it. The carved fireplace, the plasterwork, the proportions of the room itself. These things were here long before us, and they’ll be here long after. We’re just the latest chapter.

It’s been a wonderful first week. Here’s to many more 🥰

My highlight of the last month was manoeuvring me into the correct position for the autocue when presenting an award - and I still had to tiptoe to see it!!

Yesterday's event at the beautiful felt extra special ✨

Not only did we gather with an incredible group of clients and connections, but we also marked two personal milestones - 10 years since I started this business, and my 54th birthday.

I couldn't have asked for a better way to celebrate. Great conversations, familiar faces, new connections, and a brilliant Gujarati street food breakfast from that was an absolute hit!

A big thank you to everyone who joined us; your support, trust and energy over the years is what's made this journey possible. It really does mean a lot.

Here's to the next chapter 🥂

Missing beneficiaries ....

An estate cannot close until every legal heir is found, not most of them.
Every single one.

That sounds straightforward until you work in probate and realise how complicated family pictures actually are. People emigrate and lose touch; relationships end without clean documentation. Children are born into circumstances that kept them off the family’s radar for decades. Relatives who were mentioned once, in passing, and then never again.

Every one of those gaps is a potential entitled heir. And until they’re located, verified, and accounted for, the estate sits in limbo along with everyone else waiting to move on.

At Pro-Gen Research, tracing missing beneficiaries is the core of what we do. We persevere in locating all beneficiaries for as long as it takes us to close the gap properly with a legally sound evidence chain, not guesswork.

What’s the longest a case has sat with you due to an unresolved beneficiary question? And what eventually resolved it? 👇

Ten years ago today, I took a leap and started my own probate genealogy business - Pro-Gen Research Limited.

At the beginning, I had a page and a handful of email contacts. Slowly, enquiries started to come in, the client list grew, a website was developed, and I was able to leave my 9–5 to focus fully on building the business.

Along the way there have been some personal challenges but my business adjusts keep me motivated.

Starting Pro-Gen Research is easily the best decision of my professional life. It’s given me the freedom to be independent, decisive and imaginative. I’ve developed so many skills but, most importantly, it’s the relationships I’ve built along the way - with clients, contacts, peers and beneficiaries - that have meant the most.

So, to everyone I’ve worked with, met at events, or connected with on LinkedIn (even if we haven’t met in person yet), thank you. You’ve made the last ten years truly special, and I’m excited to continue this journey with as many of you as possible.

Today I spent a fascinating few hours exploring Highgate Cemetery, soaking up the history, hearing stories of the famous (and infamous), and learning about the ongoing restoration work. Safe to say it’s exactly my kind of outing. Our tour guide, Terry, was so much fun and added lots of amusing tales that kept the tour really interesting and totally unscripted.

Afterwards, a small group of us rewarded our uphill efforts with a well-earned late lunch at a pub with good food, great company, and plenty more lively conversation.

Feeling very grateful for the invite from Claire Sharp and Claire McGill. Honestly, what could be more perfect for a genealogist? 🌿
