After spending the past two weeks getting to know Shirley, a resident at Ashfields Care Home, today we enjoyed our first trip out together to the beautiful Walled Gardens in Little Plumstead.

We had a lovely walk around the gardens, admiring the colourful flowers and chatting about the different plants and blooms along the way. Afterwards, we treated ourselves to a pot of tea and some cake in the cafΓ©.

Shirley was full of smiles throughout the day and clearly enjoyed the fresh air, beautiful surroundings, and good company. It was a wonderful outing and a special first trip together, creating lovely memories and plenty of conversation to share back at the home. πŸŒΈβ˜•πŸ°
We are already looking forward to our next adventure together πŸ’œ

🌟 A Day of Meaningful Support 🌟

Today has been another rewarding day providing person-centred dementia support and companionship to our wonderful service users.

πŸ’™ Diane enjoyed her weekly shower and pamper session having her nails filed, painted and a relaxing hand massage, all while being kept hydrated with Jelly Drops, helping her feel refreshed, comfortable, and confident. These regular routines are so important in promoting wellbeing and maintaining independence.

πŸ•’ Liz received her new dementia-friendly clock today, Natasha suggested this and helped Liz order the clock. Liz had recently been struggling with the day/date. Simple adaptations like these can make a huge difference, providing reassurance, reducing confusion, and helping maintain orientation throughout the day.

β˜• Natasha also provided a 1-to-1 visit to a care home resident, including a lovely trip out for coffee. Getting out into the community, enjoying a change of scenery, and sharing meaningful conversation can have a positive impact on mood and overall wellbeing.

Every visit is about more than just support – it's about dignity, companionship, independence, and helping people continue to enjoy the things that matter most to them πŸ’œ

β€˜Is it typical for someone with dementia to sleep during the day?’

Yes, it is quite common for someone with dementia to spend a lot of time sleeping, both during the day and night.

Sleeping more and more is a common feature of later-stage dementia.

As the disease progresses, the damage to a person’s brain becomes more extensive and they gradually become weaker and frailer over time.

As a result, they may find it quite exhausting to do relatively simple tasks like communicating or eating.

The type of dementia a person has can affect their sleep.

People who have dementia caused by Lewy body disease are often sleepy by day but have very restless and disturbed nights. They may often unknowingly β€˜act’ out their dreams by shouting and moving around in bed.

What should I do if a person with dementia is sleeping a lot?

It can be worrying, but if they don’t appear to be uncomfortable or distressed, then sleeping more during the day isn’t normally a reason to be worried.

However, if the excessive sleeping has started more suddenly, or the person doesn’t seem well in other ways, it may not be caused by dementia.

If this is the case you should speak to the GP to rule out any infections, other conditions, or to conduct a medication review.

If a person is lying down in bed and asleep for most of the time they will need to be looked after to make sure they don’t develop any physical health problems.

If they are living at home, then it’s important to get advice from your GP or nurse on how best to do this.
