"Happy 3rd Birthday to us, Paradigm First Aid Training!" 🎉💙

Today marks three years since Paradigm was born, and I couldn’t be prouder of how far we’ve come.

As business owners, we don’t always take the time to stop and reflect, we’re usually too busy looking ahead to the next milestone. But taking a moment today, I am truly blown away by this journey.

On the 4th September 2023, I vividly remember saying to myself as I registered on Companies House, and to everyone I spoke to about my new venture, "I have a 3 year plan for Paradigm" It was clear to me what I needed to do, yet terrifying in the fact I was taking a risk. I had the backing of my wife, family and close friends which helped me take the leap.

Today, I have reached that date, and happy to celebrate the fact that I have exceeded my own expectations! Paradigm is now established and is setting a gold standard for First aid training.

To every single client, partner, and business that has trusted us with their first aid training over the last three years: "Thank you!" Paradigm simply wouldn’t be here without your ongoing support and belief in what we do. Building these relationships has been the most rewarding part of the job, and I’m so excited to keep working alongside you in Year 4 and beyond! 💙

To cap off this incredible milestone, in two weeks’ time we’ll be attending The BIBAs 2026 Business Awards black-tie event as a finalist for "New Business of the Year". I’m thrilled to be celebrating the night alongside my amazing wife and my mum, taking a moment to sit back, dress up, and celebrate how far Paradigm has come! 🥂✨

Here’s to three incredible years of supporting people to save lives through our training, and to an even bigger, brighter future ahead! Some exciting news is coming, Stay tuned! 🥂

Today we have been up to sunny Penrith to deliver another Emergency first aid course for the amazing team at Euphoric Circus, with special thanks also to Cumbria Youth Alliance for helping to organise the day.

The engagement from this group today was incredible, it’s always refreshing when I get a group like this to teach, with lots of questions and discussions which help contextualise the practical learning.

A rewarding two days delivering our Level 3 First Aid for Mental Health Supervisor course in Liverpool this week.

With a fantastic view of Goodison Park from the venue, I had the privilege of working with a team who provide vital support to young adults aged 16–18 who are facing challenges around accommodation and independence.

This type of work really highlights why mental health awareness and support skills are so important. The people we train are often the first point of contact for individuals who may be struggling, and having the confidence, knowledge and understanding to recognise signs, start conversations and offer appropriate support can make a genuine difference.

The Level 3 Supervisor course goes beyond awareness — it equips learners to become a mental health champion within their organisation, helping to build a culture where wellbeing conversations are encouraged and support is accessible.

A big thank you to the team for their engagement, openness and willingness to share experiences throughout the two days. It was a pleasure to work with you.

We have been in Liverpool City Centre today delivering a First aid for mental health qualification for the amazing team at Roof Management RMLFS.

What started as a group of colleagues learning together quickly became a space where people felt comfortable enough to share experiences, listen without judgement, and have conversations that might not otherwise have happened.

Watching that change throughout the day was a powerful reminder that creating a positive mental health culture doesn’t happen through policies alone, it starts with people feeling safe to talk.

One of the most rewarding pieces of feedback was hearing the team reflect on how today’s discussions could influence the way they support one another and help shape the culture within their organisation moving forward. That is exactly what this training is about. It’s not about having all the answers; it’s about recognising when someone might need support, having the confidence to start a conversation, and knowing where to signpost them for further help.

A huge thank you to RMLFS Ltd for embracing the training with such honesty, openness, and willingness to learn from one another. Your engagement made today’s session what it was, and I’m looking forward to seeing the positive impact these conversations continue to have.

Mental health matters. Conversations matter. And sometimes, all it takes is creating the right environment for people to realise they’re not alone.

It's also worth recognising the role that CITB Employer Network funding has played in making opportunities like this more accessible for employers. When organisations can invest in training that supports both skills and wellbeing, the impact reaches far beyond the classroom.

Today's session was a great example of how funded opportunities can support to spark meaningful conversations, strengthen teams, and contribute to a healthier workplace culture.

I am really frustrated and deeply concerned, I can’t keep it in!

“It’s like allowing someone to pass their driving test by playing on Mario Kart for a few hours one morning”

I’ve now seen two separate adverts today promoting “Level 3 Accredited First Aid” courses that are completed entirely online.

One was advertised at less than £5 per person. Another offered a Level 3 First Aid at Work course for £12.99. This is meant to be a three day course, that they claim can be completed within 3 and a half hours online??!! 3 and a half hours!! Online!!

It genuinely makes me wonder… how does competence in CPR compression depth and speed get assessed there? By tapping the space bar at two taps per second??

When did we start believing that practical lifesaving skills can be “mastered” by watching a screen alone?

These adverts talk about “building confidence” and “mastering skills.” But how can someone truly build confidence in CPR, using a defibrillator, controlling catastrophic bleeding, or reforming abdominal thrusts without ever practising those skills?

My biggest concern isn’t the price. It’s not about money, it’s about doing things the right way!

It’s also that employers and individuals may purchase these courses believing they’re meeting their legal obligations and that they’ll be prepared if someone collapses in front of them.

First aid isn’t about passing an online quiz.

It’s about having the confidence and competence to act when another human being’s life depends on you.

Technology has an important place in learning. Blended learning can be an excellent approach when it’s combined with robust face-to-face practical assessment.

But replacing practical training altogether for “qualifications” that claim to develop competence? That’s a worrying direction for our profession.

If we continue to reduce first aid training to the cheapest online certificate available, we have to ask ourselves:

“Are we training people to save lives… or simply selling certificates?”

I’d be interested to hear the views of other first aid trainers, health & safety professionals and employers.

I start off my training by telling my learners that the first aid training industry is a Joke…. I stand by that comment!! Paradigm first aid has an obligation to clean up this mess, and we intend to keep shouting!
