Wednesday Wisdom 🌿

As July draws to a close, it's worth asking yourself one simple question: how has your body felt this month?

Maybe you've stayed wonderfully active. Maybe summer has thrown up a few new aches you weren't expecting. Maybe an old problem has resurfaced after months of being fine.

Whatever the answer, awareness is always the first step. You don't have to live with discomfort just because it's become familiar.

There's still time to sort things out before summer ends.

Feeling less motivated to move in this heat? You're not alone, and it's completely normal. πŸ₯΅

High temperatures genuinely sap energy and motivation, and pushing through with your usual routine isn't always realistic or sensible.

Instead of skipping the activity altogether, try adjusting it. Shorter sessions, cooler times of day, or swapping high-intensity activity for a gentle swim or walk can keep you moving without the struggle.

Consistency matters more than intensity, especially in summer.

Does hot weather affect your joints? For many people, the answer is yes. 🌑️

It might seem counterintuitive. Surely warmth should help? And for some people it does, muscles tend to feel looser and more relaxed in the heat. But for others, particularly those living with arthritis or inflammatory joint conditions, humidity and changes in atmospheric pressure that often accompany hot weather can actually increase swelling, stiffness, and discomfort.

A few things that can help during warmer spells:

βœ… Stay well hydrated. Cartilage is largely made up of water, and dehydration can increase joint stiffness.
βœ… Keep gently moving. Staying still in the heat makes stiffness worse, not better.
βœ… Avoid overdoing it during peak heat. Early morning or evening activity is kinder on your joints.

If your joints have been more troublesome than usual this summer, it's worth getting them properly assessed rather than just waiting for the weather to change.

Tomorrow is International Self-Care Day. A timely reminder that looking after your body isn't a luxury, it's a necessity. πŸ’š

We talked a few weeks ago about how closely your mind and body are connected. Self-care isn't just bubble baths and quiet evenings, sometimes it's simply addressing the physical pain or stiffness you've been carrying around for far too long.

If you've been putting off dealing with something, consider this your gentle nudge. You deserve to feel your best.

Some injuries seem to show up every summer without fail. Here are three of the most common, and what to do about them. 🩹

Sprained ankles, often from uneven ground on walks or at festivals. Rest, ice, and gentle movement help, but persistent swelling needs assessing.

Shoulder strain, frequently from swimming, paddleboarding, or overhead activities. Often caused by doing too much too soon.

Lower back pain, commonly triggered by gardening, DIY, or unfamiliar physical activity. Usually responds very well to early, targeted treatment.

If any of these sound familiar, don't wait for it to settle on its own. Early treatment means a faster, more complete recovery.

We're halfway through summer. How's your body holding up? 🌞

More activity, more time outdoors, more events and occasions, summer tends to ask a lot of our bodies, often without us noticing until something starts to ache.

Take a moment today to check in with yourself. Any stiffness creeping in? Any discomfort you've been brushing off? Any movement that doesn't feel quite as easy as it used to?

There's still plenty of summer left to enjoy. Let's make sure your body is ready for it.

Out on the course more this summer? Your golf swing might be telling your back something. β›³

The rotational forces involved in a golf swing place real demand on your spine, particularly your lower back. Poor technique, inadequate warm-up, or pre-existing stiffness can all increase the risk of strain.

A few minutes of gentle rotation and hip mobility work before you play can make a noticeable difference, both to your comfort and your game.

If back pain has been creeping in after your rounds, it's worth having it looked at rather than just playing through it.

Wednesday Wisdom 🌿

Picnics, festivals, garden games, beach days, July is full of moments spent sitting or kneeling on the ground. If that's starting to feel surprisingly uncomfortable, you're not imagining it.

As we get older, hip and knee mobility naturally decreases if we don't actively work on it, making low, ground-level positions feel much harder than they used to.

The good news is, this is very trainable. Gentle hip and knee mobility work, even just a few minutes a few times a week, can make a real difference to how comfortably you move at ground level.

Don't let it stop you from joining in this summer.

Caught the tennis bug this summer? Your elbow might disagree. 🎾

Tennis elbow isn't only caused by tennis. It can develop from any repetitive gripping or wrist movement, including DIY, gardening, or other racquet sports. It causes pain on the outside of the elbow that can become surprisingly persistent if left untreated.

The good news is, it usually responds very well to the right physiotherapy approach, often without needing any injections or surgery.

If you've been ignoring a niggly elbow, this is your sign to get it looked at.
