The Crafty Penguin Club Art Classes, Craft Classes, for children age 6 to15. Based in North Preston. Term time membership clubs in Garstang and Cottam.

I saw a photo recently of an art teacher leaning over a child's project — and it looked like she'd drawn on it herself.

I don't say that with judgement. I've been there. The pull to "just fix it a little" is real.

But it made me think about what I call The Helicopter Effect

Sometimes, we help children because we want them to succeed.

But have you ever noticed what happens when we help a little too much?

"Try this."
"Put it there."
"That would look better."

Little by little, their project becomes ours.

One of the hardest things I've learned as an art teacher is when not to step in.

In my club, I'll always show a child the technique — how to hold the brush, how a material behaves, what the process involves. But what they do with it? The colours, the materials, how it all comes together — that's entirely theirs.

Children don't build confidence because adults make their artwork better. They build confidence because they discover they can make their own decisions and solve problems themselves.

Sometimes the best thing we can do... is take one step back.

This is exactly how I run my art club.

I often hear parents say they think The Crafty Penguin Club might be a bit too far to fit into their week, but when you actually check the drive time, it’s usually much closer than expected.

While children are settled in their session, parents often use that time in a way that works for them.

A quiet drink in the car, a quick shop at Tesco or Spar, or even just a bit of space without being needed for five minutes. Just a small pocket of time that feels useful in a busy week.

If you’ve ever thought, “It’s probably too far,” it’s often closer than it feels.

We know many parents choose to stay nearby while their children are in class.

From September, we'll have a complimentary Brew & Biscuit Station available during our sessions.

Whether you'd like to catch up on some work, read a book or simply enjoy a quiet cup of tea or coffee, you're very welcome to help yourself while you wait.
