A huge thank you to Dave McCann and his friends Jack, Sam and Joe, who recently completed a 177-mile cycle across Britain, raising an incredible £3,030 for Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Charity in memory of Dave’s dad, Andrew 🙏🧡✨
Andrew sadly passed away last September after becoming seriously ill with Legionnaires’ Disease and received care from the Critical Care Unit at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Dave organised the three-day cycle from Scarborough to Blackpool as a way to thank the team who cared for his dad and to support the unit that meant so much to his family.
Dave said: "The one-to-one care unit staff gave dad, who had been struggling to breathe when he pulled over, was just immense. Staff did everything to make him as comfortable as possible. The doctors were very honest with us from the start but assured us they wouldn’t give up on trying to make dad better unless dad’s body gave up. We lost our mum Jean five years ago to cancer and we believe dad did want to go and be with her."
"Dad was very handy. He was always doing things to help others. His final act of going to cut the grass was an example of him putting others before himself. We all agreed that the staff on the Critical Care Unit worked their 12-hour shifts similarly. It was as if their job was their vocation. They did everything they could for dad, which is why I organised the cycle. The funds raised for LTHC are for the unit."
Starting in Scarborough and finishing in Blackpool, the three-day cycle was no easy challenge. Despite extreme heat and a fall which resulted in a fractured elbow for Jack, the team showed incredible determination to complete the route together.
The money raised will support the Critical Care Unit, helping staff make improvements that will benefit patients and families receiving care.
