A report in New Scientist last year stated that feeling profound grief years after the death of a loved one could affect our own lifespan.

Such people have a higher risk of dying within the decade following their loved one's death than those who come to terms with their loss more easily.
It is long established that bereavement is linked to poor health outcomes.

A Danish study involving 1700 mourners found that prolonged, intense grief puts a strain on the body and exacerbates pre-existing health conditions, leading to earlier death.
It may also bring about lifestyle changes, as bereaved people might be less likely to eat regular nutritious meals and stay active. 😔

Do you know someone experiencing severe, prolonged grief who could benefit from extra support? 🤗 🫶

The mind and body are inexorably connected; taking care of one has a positive impact on the other.

Physical activity boosts our happiness as well as our health and helps us to cope better during challenging times. 👣 👣 👣

Studies show that physical activity has the potential to help manage and prevent symptoms of depression. 😀

Try to incorporate more physical activity into your day: singing & dancing 🕺👯 a short walk around the block, walking up and down the stairs a couple of times during the adverts of your favourite TV show.

If you're stuck at a desk, remember to move regularly, stand up and stretch.
If no one is looking try a few star jumps!

If mobility is difficult for you, raising your arms up and out will raise your heart rate 🙆‍♂️ provide benefits to both your body and mind and help us to feel more cheerful!

We can’t have life without death; they’re two sides of the same coin.

Consequently, many of us have experienced profound grief – heart breaking and debilitating - however, in time, this eases.
Unfortunately, for some people, the pain persists and develops into Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD). 😪

The condition was recognised formally in 2022, but some disputed this and argued that there is no correct or ‘normal’ way to grieve.

Nevertheless, a review of evidence comparing the brain activity of people with and without Prolonged Grief Disorder suggested that PGD is a mental health condition in its own right.

These findings could help to identify those who may be at high risk of experiencing prolonged grief and these people could access and benefit most from bereavement support and counselling. 🫶 🤗

This year, Mental Health Awareness Week will take place from 11th to 17th May.

The theme for 2026 is 'Action', and the focus of this week is to create real change by taking action together. 🤝

Together, we’ve come a long way on mental health, but we can’t risk going backwards.
There’s still much we can do to prevent people becoming unwell in the first place. 🥰

So join Evolve Therapy in taking action for yourself, for someone else and for all of us. 👍

Find one thing today to boost your own mental health; maybe focus on your breathing for 30 seconds?

How can you create a more mentally healthy school, workplace or community today? Remember, doing something for others is good for our own mental health too.

Is there a way in which you can persuade decision and policy makers to prioritise the mental health of those in their sphere of influence. Will they take action to address the root causes of mental ill health so we can all stay well? 🤗 🫶

For most people and for most of the time our minds are racing with thoughts: ruminating on the past, worrying about all the things we currently have to do, trying to gain some certainty about the future. 🏃‍➡️ 🏃‍♀️‍➡️ 🏃‍♂️‍➡️

However, multiple research studies have shown that actively being in the moment can help boost happiness, reduce stress and improve both our mental and physical health. ☺️

Why not try purposefully creating a few minutes of being mindful and in the present each and every day?

Do you enjoy listening to a particular piece of music or spending time outside focusing on nature? 🐝

If time is limited or your environment is fixed, just focusing solely on your breathing for 30 seconds between tasks can help you feel calmer and more in the present.
For 30 seconds close your eyes and breathe in. Notice the cool air on the inside of your nose, your lungs filling and your abdomen rising.
As you breath out notice how you feel relaxed. 😊
Just keep breathing in and out at whatever pace works for you. Don’t worry if your mind wanders, just bring it back to your breath. Keep practising!

However your day goes today, I hope you will find some moments of being present.

EMDR therapy was discovered in America in the 80’s (Shapiro 1987), and used to successfully treat war-related Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

It helps connect the brain's memory networks, enabling the unprocessed traumatic memory to be processed using your body's natural healing ability.

Now recognised as an effective treatment for all types of PTSD, it also helps with conditions such as anxiety, depression, phobias and many others.

Pam at Evolve therapy is a very experienced EMDR therapist and has helped many people.

EMDR Encourages Communication

One of the things that is more common with people who have gone through trauma is that they tend to hide their experiences.
This may be because they feel that by communicating their experiences they may be judged or targeted by others, or they don’t want to be a burden to those close to them. 😔

Working with a therapist who specialises in EMDR encourages communication of experiences and challenges individuals to verbalise their physical responses. 💬

Exposure to traumatic events in childhood and adolescence can involve big and small traumas. These may be single events, clusters of traumas or cumulative experiences.

Trauma is pervasive in millions of children’s lives across the world but studies suggest that without treatment trauma symptoms can be extensive and enduring throughout the person’s life.

A 2018 article in the Journal of EMDR Practice and Research reported on the outcomes of scientifically robust trials that indicated EMDR therapy is an effective treatment for children from 7 to 17 years.

EMDR was shown to be as effective as the existing cognitive behavioural therapy used to treat children with trauma symptoms. Plus, EMDR was more efficient in achieving positive outcomes.
Additionally, numerous studies suggest EMDR therapy may be effective with children in the early years as well as for a wide range of other mental health conditions.

At the end of December, did you read Fergal Keane’s BBC news article about the effect of war trauma on children’s brains? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cre3pdxde7vo

During his nearly four decades of reporting on conflicts Fergal has witnessed the depth of terror inflicted on children in our time.

It has been estimated that one in every five children worldwide were living in conflict zones in 2025.

In the UK, war is not a frequent cause of trauma, but overwhelming stress is often caused by witnessing domestic abuse; physical, sexual or emotional abuse; neglect; personal suffering from serious health issues or the suffering of a loved one; distressing childbirth experiences; bereavement; and witnessing traumatic events.

In his article, Keane cites experts who warn that trauma can affect the developing architecture of the brain in young children, with lifelong consequences for learning, behaviour, and both physical and mental health.

EMDR is recognised as a very effective therapy for children and young adults to support them in their recovery from traumatic and overwhelming events.

As a trained EMDR Child & Adolescent therapist I can offer your child the therapy needed to overcome trauma.
