“Professional, reassuring and of the highest calibre.”

That is how one recent client described their experience with Hearing Check — and it is exactly the standard our team aims to deliver every day.

From a first hearing assessment to earwax removal, hearing aid fitting and ongoing aftercare, nobody should feel hurried, uncertain or like just another appointment in the diary.

Richard shared that Simon “took the time to explain everything clearly, listened carefully, and made the whole appointment feel unhurried and genuinely personal.”

Sylvia told us her hearing aids had made “a big difference to everyday life”, helping her hear what is going on around her and “join in to conversations easily”.

Peter’s family said Monum “went the extra mile” to make sure his mother achieved the best possible results from her hearing aids.

And sometimes, the best outcome is simply reassurance. Stuart came in for a free hearing check and was pleased to find that he did not need treatment at all — although he is still working on convincing his wife that his hearing is fine!

Thank you to every client who takes the time to leave feedback. We are proud to offer independent, expert hearing care that is personal, honest and centred around what is right for you.

"No one will know" is exactly the point.

For a lot of people, the biggest hesitation about hearing aids isn't the sound — it's how visible they'll be.

The good news is that today's hearing aids have moved a long way from what people picture. Some of the most advanced devices now available are also among the smallest and most discreet ever made — no compromise between how they look and how well they perform.

Rechargeable, seamlessly connected, and small enough that most people never notice — for many wearers, that quiet confidence makes all the difference day to day.

At Hearing Check, we're independent, so we're never tied to one brand or one style. That means we can talk you through the full range of discreet options and find what actually suits your lifestyle, your hearing needs, and your budget — no pressure, no assumptions.

If discretion has been holding you back from getting your hearing checked, it might be worth a conversation.

One of our patients came into the Preston clinic this week with a gift for Jo — and a story that stopped the whole team in its tracks.

She'd experienced a sudden, significant change in her hearing, and spent weeks waiting anxiously to see if it would recover on its own. By the time she came to see us, she wasn't sure what to expect.

Jo took the time to really listen, explain every step clearly, and guide her through her options with no pressure at all. Within her appointment, she was hearing speech clearly again — and told us it felt like getting her life back.

It's patients like her, and moments like this, that remind us why we do what we do.

If you've noticed a change in your hearing, sudden or gradual, please don't sit with it alone. We're here.

Did you know your ears are actually self-cleaning?

Wax naturally works its way out on its own. The trouble starts when we interfere, cotton buds, in particular, tend to push wax further in rather than remove it, which can lead to build-up and even temporary hearing loss.

That's where we come in. At Hearing Check, we offer microsuction ear wax removal, a gentle, precise method carried out by trained professionals, so you can have it dealt with safely rather than risking it at home.

If you've noticed muffled hearing or discomfort, it may simply be wax, not hearing loss, and it's something we can check and resolve for you, often in the same appointment.

Ringing, buzzing, or humming in the ears that no one else can hear?

You're not alone. Around 1 in 10 adults in the UK experience tinnitus, and for many, it can be a source of ongoing frustration.

Tinnitus isn't fully understood, but support is available. Hearing aids can often include sound therapy features designed to help make it less noticeable day to day, and a proper assessment is the first step to understanding what might help.

If tinnitus has been affecting you, it's worth having a conversation about it.

Ever wondered why hearing aids can cost so much more on the high street?

Larger high-street providers often carry the overheads of big retail chains, and sometimes a tie to a single manufacturer, both of which can push prices up.

As an independent practice, we're not tied to any one brand. That means we choose what's right for you, not what hits a sales target, and we can pass the savings on — our prices are up to 40% cheaper than the high street.

It's the same expertise, the same care, just without the mark-up.

New research shows a direct link between treating hearing loss and protecting brain health.

A major clinical trial by Frank Lin, James Pike, Marilyn Albert and colleagues, published in The Lancet in 2023, followed nearly 1,000 older adults aged 70-84 with untreated hearing loss over three years. Those given hearing aids and audiologic counselling saw their cognitive decline slow by 48% compared to those who received health education alone — with the strongest effect seen in those already at higher risk.

It's one of the clearest pieces of evidence yet that hearing loss isn't just about missing words in conversation. Treating it can directly help protect the brain, not just support day-to-day hearing.

At Hearing Check, we take the time to understand your hearing properly, with no pressure and no assumptions about what you need. If it's been a while since your last check, or you've never had one, there's no better time to find out where you stand.

"Which hearing aid is the best one?"

We get asked that a lot, and the honest answer is that it depends entirely on you — your hearing, your ears, your life, what you actually struggle with.

Which is why it matters who's answering.

Some providers sell devices built exclusively for them, under their own name. Nothing wrong with that, but it does mean the recommendation is decided before you walk in.

We're independent. No manufacturer ties, no quotas, no commission riding on which box we open. If the right answer for you is a modest device rather than a top-of-the-range one, we'll say so — and it'll still cost you up to 40% less than the high street, with a 60-day money-back guarantee if you change your mind.

That's the whole of it, really. Advice you can trust because there's nothing in it for us either way.

Ears ringing after the festival?

That ringing is a warning, not a souvenir.

Sustained noise above roughly 85 decibels causes wear, and a surprising amount of an ordinary summer sits above that line. Live music. The strimmer. Power tools in the garage. The ringing usually settles by morning; the wear underneath it doesn't undo itself.

This is the one kind of hearing change that's genuinely preventable, and the fixes are dull but effective. Proper filtered earplugs at gigs — the ones that lower the volume rather than muffling everything. Ear defenders for the noisy jobs. A couple of notches off the headphones.

Nobody thanks you for that advice at thirty. Plenty of people wish they'd taken it by seventy.

If you work somewhere loud or you've a noisy hobby, come and get a baseline reading — then you've something to measure future changes against.
