We welcome new recommendations on regulating AI in healthcare, which recognise the need for transparency, accountability and human relationships.

AI may have a role to play in supporting mental health services and practitioners. But in counselling and psychotherapy, trust, empathy, professional judgement and the therapeutic relationship are fundamental.

People must be told clearly when and how AI is being used, what its limitations and risks are, and have meaningful choice about their care.

We’re calling for clear and credible regulation to make sure AI in mental health is safe, accountable and transparent, while protecting the human and relational elements of therapy.

We’ll continue to make the case for people to remain at the centre of mental health care, as the use of AI develops.

Myth: “There shouldn’t be silence in counselling. I need to know what to say.”

Fact: Silence can be an important part of the counselling process.

Sometimes, when the conversation becomes quiet, it can give you the space to pause, breathe and notice what is happening within you.

You might feel stuck.
You might not know what to say next.
You might need a moment to find the words.

That’s okay.

You don’t have to fill every silence or arrive at your session knowing exactly what you want to talk about.

Often it is in these quieter moments that reflection happens - thoughts can settle, feelings can emerge and something that has been difficult to put into words may begin to take shape.

Your counsellor can sit with you in that silence. You don’t have to feel under pressure to talk.

💚Self-care reminder:
We live in a world that can feel constantly busy and noisy. Giving yourself permission to pause and be still can be a form of self-care too.

You don’t always need to have the words.
Sometimes you just need the space.

Counselling Insight 🌿
“You Are Not Your Thoughts”

Our minds produce thoughts all day long.

Some are helpful.
Some are hopeful.
Some are completely random.
And some can be surprisingly unkind.

When were are struggling, it’s easy to treat every thought as though it was a fact.

“I’m not good enough.”
“Everyone is judging me.”
“I won’t be able to cope.”

But a thought is a mental event - not necessarily a truth.

Try to notice your thoughts without automatically believing them or getting caught up in them.

Instead of: “I can’t cope” - try:
“I’m noticing the thought that I can’t cope.”

That small change creates a little distance.

And maybe we are able to ask ourselves:
“Is this thought helpful?”
“Is it completely true?”
“What would I say to someone I care about if they were thinking this?”

🪴You don’t have to fight every difficult thought.
Sometimes you can simply notice it, acknowledge it, and gently choose what you want to focus on next.

Your thoughts are part of your experience.
They don’t have to define you 💚.

Choose Wellness. Choose curiosity over criticism.

🌿Wishing you moments of calm, connection and wellbeing 🌿
