Understanding Gout: When Sudden Big Toe Pain Should Not Be Ignored.
Sudden pain, swelling, redness, and difficulty walking — especially in the big toe — may be a sign of gout, a common form of inflammatory arthritis.
Gout occurs when uric acid crystals accumulate in the joint, triggering intense pain and inflammation. Common contributing factors may include alcohol, dehydration, a rich diet, stress, and reduced kidney clearance.
From a Chinese medicine perspective, gout is often associated with damp-heat and stagnation affecting the channels. Acupuncture treatment is tailored to the individual and may help support pain relief, reduce swelling, improve circulation, and restore overall balance.
During an acute flare, it is important to:
- rest the joint
- stay well hydrated
- avoid alcohol
- seek appropriate medical advice, including assessment of uric acid, kidney, and liver function
If you experience recurrent gout, a more comprehensive approach may help address both the immediate symptoms and the underlying pattern of imbalance.

It’s not always “What disease do I have?”

Sometimes the better questions are:
Why am I always exhausted?
Why does stress affect my stomach?
Why can’t I switch off at night?
Why do I feel unlike myself?
These patterns matter — even before anything serious develops.

Health often starts with noticing patterns early.

I’m very pleased to share a professional milestone in my acupuncture journey.

After a further 2 years of advanced specialist training, I have now been awarded a Diploma in Brain Acupuncture. This training included advanced scalp acupuncture methods and clinical protocols used in support of neurological rehabilitation, including presentations such as stroke recovery, Parkinson’s disease, and brain injury.

I’m grateful to keep developing my training so I can offer a more integrated and informed approach to patient care at Four Pillars Acupuncture in St Albans.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me on this journey.

Encouraging knee pain acupuncture treatment this week

A patient presented with a 2-month history of knee pain, including marked tightness and tenderness along the Vastus Lateralis and Gallbladder channel. This appeared to be contributing to lateral patellar tracking, with a noticeable clicking knee sensation and sharp pain on the outer side of the kneecap around ST35.

Treatment involved scalp acupuncture at the Foot Motor Area, combined with needling along the Stomach/Spleen and Gallbladder channels, with electrical stimulation.

By the following day, the patient reported that the clicking had resolved.😀

A very positive response, and a good example of how acupuncture for knee pain may help support both pain relief and improved knee function.

Four Pillars Acupuncture is supporting patients with knee pain regulation in St Albans and surrounding areas.

Sleep, Stress, and the Shen in Chinese Medicine

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, poor sleep is not only about tiredness. It may reflect that the Shen — often understood as the mind or spirit — is unable to settle at night.

When the Shen is calm, sleep can be deep and restorative. But when life is full of stress, pressure, overthinking, and emotional strain, the mind may remain active even when the body is exhausted.

TCM also speaks of the Po, connected to the Lungs, breath, instinct, and the body’s ability to feel grounded and recover.

When Shen and Po are out of harmony, people may feel:

tired but wired
unable to switch off
tense, restless, or emotionally drained
exhausted, but not deeply rested
Over time, this can affect not only sleep, but also stress levels, pain, fatigue, and recovery.

This is one reason acupuncture can be so helpful.
Treatment is not only about symptoms — it is about helping the mind settle, the body soften, and the nervous system regain balance.

Sometimes healing begins with something very simple:

letting the Shen come home.

If you are struggling with sleep, stress, fatigue, or persistent tension, acupuncture may help support a deeper sense of rest and recovery.

In acupuncture, treatment is guided by a deep understanding of the body’s channels, collaterals, and internal organ systems. Classical Chinese medicine teaches that effective treatment depends on seeing how these pathways connect and how balance changes with the seasons and the individual.😀

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, knee pain is not viewed only as a problem within the joint itself. It may be understood in relation to circulation, muscles, tendons, posture, and the body’s overall internal balance. This is why two people with the same knee diagnosis may receive different treatment. At Four Pillars Acupuncture in St Albans, acupuncture is tailored to the individual and may help support mobility, reduce tension, and encourage recovery.

Running on empty?

By this point in the year, many people begin to notice the effects of prolonged stress and accumulated fatigue.

You may find yourself experiencing:

• Ongoing neck and shoulder tension
• Poor or fragmented sleep
• Fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest
• Headaches or mental exhaustion
• Difficulty fully switching off

Often, these patterns build gradually over time.

At Four Pillars Acupuncture, treatment focuses not only on symptom relief, but on supporting the body’s ability to regulate and recover more effectively.
