Preparing for a new arrival can feel incredibly exciting, but it is also completely normal to feel a bit overwhelmed by the sheer amount of baby gear out there!

From prams and cots to endless rows of clothing, it is easy to wonder: how much stuff do I actually need?

If you are expecting or planning for a little one, keeping things simple can help save money, reduce stress, and keep your home clutter-free. Here are a few friendly hints and tips to get you started:

πŸ‘Ά Stick to the essentials first: Focus on safe sleeping spaces, basic clothing layers, nappies, and safe transport. Most other things can be bought as and when you find you actually need them.

πŸ“¦ Borrow or buy secondhand: Babies grow out of clothing and equipment incredibly fast. Moses baskets, baby baths, and maternity clothes are perfect items to find secondhand or borrow from friends and family. Just ensure any mattress or car seat you use is brand new for safety.

πŸ“ Make a list and check it twice: It is very easy to get swept up in cute gadgets. Write down a list of the absolute basics before you go shopping to help stay focused.

For a wealth of trusted advice, guides, and practical tips on managing pregnancy and preparing for your new arrival, the Best Start in Life website is an amazing resource.

Ever wondered what a busy month looks like behind the scenes at our practice? πŸ“žπŸ“Š

We want to share a quick update from our latest monthly management report for May 2026 to show you the sheer volume of calls our team handles, and how hard they work to get you connected as quickly as possible.

Our team is dedicated to keeping our lines moving, and the numbers really show their incredible effort:

πŸ“ž A massive volume of calls: Throughout May, our reception team received a total of 9,116 inbound calls.

🀝 Getting you answered: Out of all the calls that entered our phone queues, our staff successfully answered 5,657 of them. That means we answered a fantastic 84.6% of all queued calls.

⏱️ Keeping wait times down: Despite the huge volume of enquiries, our average queue wait time for answered calls was kept to a steady 4 minutes and 14 seconds.

🩺 Checking in on you: Our care teams are also incredibly proactive. Alongside answering your incoming queries, our staff made 4,729 outbound calls in May to follow up on patient care, check in on test results, and contact hospitals.

When are we busiest?
Unsurprisingly, our peak times are first thing in the morning, particularly at 8:00 am on Monday and Tuesdays, which consistently stands out as our busiest day of the week for phone queues.

If your query is non-urgent, calling later in the morning or in the afternoon can often help you beat the busiest queues. Alternatively, remember you can use our online services for routine admin requests, prescription renewals, and non-urgent messages.

A massive thank you to our patient community for your ongoing patience, and an equally huge shout-out to our hard-working reception and admin teams who keep everything running smoothly every single day!

Short-term wheelchair hire now available in Semington β™Ώ

The Independent Living Centre in Semington is delighted to announce that their short-term wheelchair hire service is up and running again, with chairs available for both adults and children.

If you or a family member need temporary mobility support, here is everything you need to know about accessing this community service:

πŸ’· Cost and Deposits: There is no fixed charge for the hire. The centre asks for a Β£20 cash deposit, which is fully refundable when the wheelchair is returned.

❀️ Community Donations: Upon returning the chair, a donation towards the centre is requested to help keep this valuable service running. Some people choose to donate their deposit, while others give what they can. Every contribution makes a difference, and no one will be refused access to a wheelchair due to cost.

⚠️ Important Fitting Notice: The centre does not currently have leg raisers available. This means these particular wheelchairs are not suitable for anyone who has been medically advised to keep their leg elevated.

⏰ How to Book: At least 48 hours notice is required for all hire requests. This ensures a trained member of staff is available to review your needs and confirm that a suitable wheelchair is ready and in stock for you.

If you would like to arrange a hire or have any questions, please contact the Independent Living Centre directly:

Planning a pregnancy or recently found out you are expecting? Taking care of your health early on is one of the best gifts you can give your growing baby. πŸ’ŠπŸ€°

Folic acid is an essential vitamin that plays a massive role in your baby's development. Taking a daily supplement helps protect your unborn baby against neural tube defects, such as spina bifida.

To give your little one the best start, here are the general health recommendations:

πŸ—“οΈ Start early if you can: It is ideally recommended to start taking 400 micrograms of folic acid every day before you conceive, right up until the 12th week of your pregnancy.

πŸ₯‘ Eat a balanced diet: Alongside your daily supplement, you can naturally boost your intake by eating folate-rich foods like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, spinach, kale, peas, and fortified breakfast cereals.

πŸ’¬ Speak to your team: If you have a family history of neural tube defects, diabetes, or take certain medications, you might need a higher dose. Your GP or midwife can advise you on the right amount for your specific journey.

For trusted, expert guidance on everything you need to know about vitamins, supplements, and staying healthy throughout your pregnancy, the Best Start in Life website is a wonderful place to turn.

Protecting our little ones' development 🧠✨

The UK Government has released new guidance on screen time for children under five. It is important to know that excessive screen time is linked to negative effects on a child’s health and development.

🚫 Large amounts of screen time can affect social, emotional, language, and brain development.
🚫 It can also impact a child’s sleep, eyesight, and weight.
🚫 Young children’s brains are much more easily over-stimulated than those of adults.

To help your child have the best start in life, the latest advice is to avoid screen time entirely for those under two years old. For children aged two to five, try to limit use to no more than one hour a day. It is also recommended to avoid social media and AI toys or chat-bots, as these are not designed for young brains.
