Worried about how much screen time is too much for your child? You’re not alone πŸ’™

New UK guidance helps parents and carers build healthy screen habits for children under 5 in a simple, realistic way πŸ‘

For younger children:
β€’ Under 2s – avoid screen time where possible, except for shared activities like video calls or looking at photos together
β€’ Ages 2–5 – aim for no more than 1 hour a day, and less if possible ⏱️

It’s not just about time, but how screens are used. Choosing slow-paced, age-appropriate content and watching together can support learning and development πŸ“Ί

Too much screen time can take away from the things that matter most at this age, like sleep, play, and time spent talking with parents and carers 🧸

Try setting simple boundaries like no screens at mealtimes or before bed, and swap screen time for activities like reading, playing, or chatting together πŸ“š

This Pride Month, you'll notice a very special rainbow on display here at Hackness Road Surgery. We want to be open and honest about what it means to us and why it matters for your health.

Our rainbow is handmade with love. It is a knit and crochet community project, created together by colleagues, friends and patients of Hackness Road Surgery. Every individual square was created by someone in our community and then assembled into the rainbow you see today. It is a living symbol of what we believe: that care, creativity, and community are stronger together.

🌈Everyone deserves equal care

LGBTQ+ people face significant health inequalities. We are committed to providing the same high-quality, respectful care to every single patient who walks through our door.

🌈You should feel safe to be honest with us

Good healthcare depends on open conversations. We want you to feel completely comfortable discussing your life, relationships, and identity without fear of judgement.

🌈Mental health matters to us

LGBTQ+ individuals experience higher rates of anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges - often linked to stigma and exclusion. We're here to support you.

🌈Visibility saves lives

Knowing your GP is an inclusive affirming space means patients are more likely to seek help early. That simple act of visibility genuinely improves health outcomes.

🌈Our team reflects our community

We celebrate the diversity of our staff and our patients. Inclusion isn't a policy statement - it's part of how we work every day.

Our promise you: lf you ever feel you have not been treated with dignity and respect at this surgery, please speak to our Practice Manager. We take this seriously and will act.

Hackness Road Surgery: Caring for our whole community.

Enjoying the sunshine? Make sure you’re protecting your skin properly β˜€οΈ

Sunscreen is important, but it shouldn’t be your only line of defence. Wearing suitable clothing, spending time in the shade, and avoiding the sun when it’s strongest (11am–3pm) can all help reduce your risk of sunburn and long-term skin damage 🌀️

When choosing sunscreen, look for:
β€’ SPF 30 or higher to protect against UVB rays
β€’ At least 4-star UVA protection or a UVA symbol in a circle
β€’ Broad-spectrum protection covering both UVA and UVB β˜€οΈ

Don’t forget to apply sunscreen generously about 20–30 minutes before going outside and reapply every 2 hours, especially after swimming or sweating πŸ’§

Even water-resistant sunscreen needs reapplying, as water and towels can remove it more easily than you think 🌊

27/05/2026

Staying active as you get older is one of the best ways to maintain independence, improve wellbeing and reduce the risk of conditions like heart disease and stroke. It’s never too late to start, and even small amounts of movement can make a difference. πŸ’™πŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈβœ¨

For older adults, the NHS recommends:
β€’ Being active every day, even with light activities πŸŒΏπŸ’™
β€’ Aiming for around 150 minutes of moderate activity each week, such as brisk walking πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈβœ¨
β€’ Doing strength exercises at least twice a week to keep muscles strong πŸ’ͺ🩺
β€’ Including balance and flexibility activities to reduce the risk of falls βš–οΈπŸŒ±

Activities like walking, gardening, swimming or gentle exercise classes can all help improve physical and mental wellbeing, as well as reduce loneliness and support independence.

25/05/2026

Bladder cancer is one of the most common cancers, and recognising the signs early can make a real difference to outcomes. The most common symptom is blood in your p*e, even if it only happens once or is not painful, and it should always be checked by a GP.

Other symptoms to look out for include:
β€’ Pain, burning or stinging when passing urine πŸ’§βš οΈ
β€’ Needing to p*e more often or urgently 🚽⏱️
β€’ Repeated urinary infections πŸ”πŸ©Ί
β€’ Pain in the lower tummy or back πŸ€•βœ¨
β€’ Feeling very tired or losing weight without trying πŸ’™πŸ“‰

These symptoms are often caused by other conditions, but it’s important not to ignore them. Getting checked early can lead to earlier diagnosis and more effective treatment.
