‘Give us gladness that connects
with the Friend, a taste of the quick,
you that make a cypress strong
and jasmine, jasmine.
Give us the inner listening
that is a way in itself
and the oldest thirst there is.
Don’t measure it out with a cup.
I am a fish. You are the moon.
You cannot touch me, but your light
can fill the ocean where I live.’

This is my favourite poem written by the 13th century Persian poet and Sufi master Jalaluddin Rumi.
It conjures up so many feelings and much the same as the ocean, our emotions are ever changing with the ebb and flow of life, we are fluid beings and cannot be kept at just one state.
For me, Rumi’s message speaks of self trust, recognising our inner voice which holds all the truth and light we are seeking, it has always been there, moving from life to life along with our essence, filling us to the brim, the greatest expanse as the ocean, and all we have to do is dip our toes in.
What does Rumi’s poem mean to you?
