Often in sessions people say it feels so much easier after therapy—like untangling a ball of wool. And then real life kicks back in.

Let’s be clear… shifting from thinking and feeling into doing can feel like going from GCSE level understanding to PhD level application.

And in the middle of a busy week, the mind has a tendency to zoom in on what hasn’t been done, what’s still left, or how things feel like they’re “not going well enough.” It’s rarely neutral—it’s often critical.

So as we reach the middle of the week, here are a few simple reframes:

1. To-do list → priority list
Not everything belongs today. What actually matters today?

2. “I’ll start next week” → “What’s one small thing I can do today?” You don’t need perfect motivation—small steps still count. Just because you haven’t done it so far this week.. don’t wait until next.

3. “I should keep going” → “What is my body asking for?”
Rest isn’t laziness. It’s regulation. Notice what comes up when you pause. Does it feel uncomfortable? What does this feeling remind you of?

Sometimes the shift isn’t doing more… it’s seeing differently what is already happening.

‼️Save this as a reminder for your midweek mood critic

🤔This quote speaks to something many of us experience in relationships.

We are often drawn to people whose strengths complement our own. The calm person may be attracted to someone spontaneous. The planner may admire someone who lives in the moment. The nurturer may be drawn to someone independent.

Yet during times of stress, those very differences can become sources of frustration. We can find ourselves wishing the other person would think, feel, or respond more like we do.

Understanding these dynamics can help us move from blame to curiosity. Instead of asking, “Why aren’t they more like me?” we might ask, “What can I learn from this difference?”

Sometimes our greatest relationship challenges point us towards parts of ourselves that are still growing.

As we head into half term, we’ll be operating at a reduced capacity over the next week while some of our clinicians take a well-earned break and some much-needed downtime. 🌿

We are now fully booked with certain therapies and clinicians until mid/late June, and appointments are going quickly for:

👉 EMDR
👉 Drug & Alcohol Recovery Coaching

So if you’re looking to begin either of these therapies over the next few weeks, now is the time to secure your appointment.

Our online consultation booking system is live 24/7.

We still have availability for a range of other adult and child services, including:

• CBT
• Child cognitive assessments
• Child therapy
• Specialist therapies

These can also be booked through our online booking system or by emailing us directly.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support. 💙

➡️ ‘Just think positive’ is often presented as a solution to emotional distress, but psychological research suggests the picture is far more nuanced.

While repetitive negative thinking and rumination can maintain low mood and anxiety, emotional suppression is also associated with poorer psychological outcomes. Studies suggest that attempts to suppress thoughts and emotions can increase their intensity, frequency, and emotional salience.

This is one reason why some psychologists critique aspects of “manifesting” culture.

The idea that thoughts alone create outcomes is not strongly supported by evidence and can, at times, reinforce:
👉emotional avoidance
👉self-blame
👉shame around distress
👉magical thinking in place of adaptive coping

Evidence-based therapies typically focus less on “positive thinking” and more on psychological flexibility, behavioural change, emotional processing, nervous system regulation, self-compassion, tolerance of uncertainty and discomfort.

Mental wellbeing is not usually achieved through eliminating difficult internal experiences, but through changing our relationship with them.

✏️📚Mental Health Awareness Week (11–17 May) is a really good moment to pause and think about how we’re supporting children — especially as SATs and GCSEs begin.

This time of year can bring a lot of pressure for young people (and for parents too). It’s easy for worries about grades and outcomes to take over, but what children often need most is calm, reassurance and connection.

They’re not just sitting exams — they’re navigating expectations, self-doubt, tiredness and pressure all at once.

A gentle reminder that support doesn’t always mean pushing harder or saying the “right” thing. Sometimes it’s just being there, staying curious, and letting them know they’re valued no matter how things go.

Because how this feels for them really does stay with them.

⭐️ We now have very limited availability for new adult face-to-face therapy appointments next week at our base in South Shields. ⭐️

We do still have alternative online appointment availability, offering a little more flexibility for those happy to work remotely.

Our initial consultation calls also remain available to book online, with a mixture of morning and some evening slots currently open.

These can be used to:
• discuss new referrals
• ask any questions about support or suitability
• explore therapy options
• or arrange ongoing therapy for alternative dates

Thank you as always for your continued trust, patience and support as our practice continues to grow 🤍

👋 Since opening, we’ve been genuinely overwhelmed by the number of professionals and clinicians who have reached out to introduce themselves, enquire about shadowing opportunities, discuss networking and associate work, or express interest in using the practice space. Thank you — we’ve loved hearing from so many passionate people in the field.

We haven’t forgotten about you. The past few weeks have been focused on getting clinical work established and managing all of the practical elements that come with opening a new practice.

Over the next couple of weeks, we’re carving out dedicated admin time specifically to respond properly, connect with people, and begin creating more space for professional collaboration and community.

We’re also really interested in thinking longer-term about opportunities for clinicians and professionals - and of course clients - including networking, CPD ideas, and potentially developing group work and collaborative projects in the future.

Thank you for your patience while we find our feet. We’re looking forward to connecting properly soon. 🙂

🌿 Meet Sarah O’Callaghan, founder and lead therapist at The Harton Practice

Sarah offers therapy to adults experiencing a wide range of difficulties, including health anxiety, social anxiety, OCD, depression, trauma, and grief.

She’s passionate about adapting therapy to individual needs, rather than making anyone feel they have to fit into a box. She also has a special interest in supporting parents who are struggling with the mental load and exploring how perfectionism can keep us feeling stuck.

Her main therapeutic approach is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and she also draws on EMDR, Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to tailor her support to each individual.

So whether it’s your first therapy journey or you want to try therapy again after a previous experience, book into your first appointment today… 🔗link in bio 😀

Outside of work, she enjoys eating out, spending time in the countryside with her family, and travelling.
