Before you scroll, listen to the trees and read this 👇

Some weeks you’ll feel lighter, more hopeful. Others, you’ll feel like you’re right back where you started. Old thoughts, patterns and defences come up.

But I have every faith that you’re not back where you started. How could you be? You know so much more now than you did back then.

It might look like saying ‘thank you’ instead of ‘sorry’. Or recognising a feeling a bit sooner than you would have done normally. It might be asking for help instead of struggling.

It’s also why it’s important that your therapist wholly and truly trusts the therapeutic process. So they can be grounded, when you’re anxious during these ebbs in between the flows.

It will pass.
It will happen again.
But each time, you’ll understand yourself a little more, and trust yourself a little deeper.

Last one is my go to 🫣

Hands up if your default is self-sacrifice 🙌

Noticing that we do this is the first step. A frustrating one at that.
It’s important to can recognise these patterns for what they are; ways of protecting ourselves.
At some point, these ways of thinking and behaving helped us to cope, adapt or survive. But, they don’t have to be permanent if they no longer serve us. Noticing gives us the opportunity to change - thank goodness!

We often set ourselves the goal of being happy all the time. But that’s an impossible standard.

Maybe a kinder goal is to notice what lights you up, what helps you feel alive, what brings you back to yourself—and make a little more room for those things. It’s much more sustainable that a such a high expectation.

Mine might not be a sand pit… but Myla has reminded me that joy is often much simpler than we think. 🤍

There was a time when being the listener, the fixer and the peacemaker felt like my identity.

I was the person people came to. The one who held space, smoothed things over and tried to make things better.

Those parts of me haven’t disappeared.

I still care deeply about people.
I still listen.
I still want to help.

The difference is that therapy taught me something I didn’t know back then.

I don’t have to do those things at my own expense.

I can care without carrying.
I can support without rescuing.
I can listen without silencing myself.
I can choose when I have the capacity to help, instead of believing I always have to.

Therapy didn’t change who I am.

It helped me stop abandoning myself in the process of being there for everyone else.

If you’ve always been “the strong one”, I wonder what this brings up for you?

Being needed and being seen aren’t the same thing.

Someone can depend on you every day, appreciate everything you do, and still not really know what it’s like to be you.

That’s why so many carers, parents, partners, helpers and people-pleasers end up feeling invisible despite being indispensable.

Both can be true.

Can you relate?

This doesn’t mean you don’t care!
It doesn’t mean you’re ignoring what’s happening in the world.
It means you’re recognising when constant exposure is leaving you feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or helpless.

Have you ever taken a break from the news or social media for your mental wellbeing? Or is this something you’ve been thinking about recently? I’d love to hear your thoughts 💬

This is my personal Signs of Stress Starter Pack 🙋‍♀️ I’m sure you have your own.
Sometimes I notice these signs on the horizon. Sometimes I notice them in the moment. Sometimes I notice when they’ve been at play for a while. Annoying 🙄
Life can make it so hard to notice our patterns because we’re expected to — or even praised for — pushing through. Sometimes it means we physically and mentally can’t push through anymore before we realise how many signs have been ignored.
These sorts of signs creep up on us and have often been established for a looong time to help us function, despite the overwhelm.
And then there’s the shame.
Shame that we didn’t notice sooner.
Shame that we’ve “slipped” again.
Next time this happens, try and think:
“What might this part of me be trying to communicate?”
not
“What do I need right now to help myself?”
Awareness is not failure.
Noticing the pattern is the progress.

These are the things people don’t always say out loud but absolutely think.

There’s often a deep need to be seen, understood, and felt that just isn’t met in our everyday lives. For whatever reason that may be.

Therapy can offer a space for all of those needs to be met, allowing you to find some relief and grow 🌻
