Why Can Pain Continue After an Injury Has Healed?
One of the most confusing experiences for people living with chronic pain is this:
"Why am I still hurting when the injury has healed?"
For many years, pain was understood mainly as a signal that something was damaged in the body. While pain can absolutely be an important warning system, modern neuroscience has shown us that pain is much more complex.
Pain is created through a conversation between the body, the brain, and the nervous system.
When we experience an injury, the nervous system increases its protective response. It sends signals to the brain to encourage rest, awareness and protection while the body repairs itself.
Usually, as healing takes place, these signals gradually settle.
However, for some people, the nervous system can remain in a heightened state of protection even after the original injury has healed. This is known as 'central sensitisation'.
A simple way to imagine this is like a smoke alarm becoming overly sensitive. Instead of only responding to a real fire, it begins reacting to smaller triggers that would not normally create such a strong response.
This can mean that everyday experiences such as movement, touch, stress, or fatigue may create stronger pain signals than expected.
The nervous system has learned a protective pattern, and because the nervous system can learn, it can also adapt.
Research into chronic pain has changed the way we understand healing. Supporting the nervous system through approaches such as relaxation, breathing practices, gentle movement, mindfulness, music and sound-based therapies may help create conditions where the body can begin moving towards greater regulation.
Sound therapy works by providing the nervous system with rhythmic, predictable and calming sensory information. Through vibration, rhythm and resonance, sound may support relaxation and help the body move away from a constant state of alert.
The goal is not to ignore pain, is to support the whole person, body, mind and nervous system. Understanding pain is the first step towards changing our relationship with it.
