Keeping your eyes safe while watching the first solar eclipse since 1999… ☀️🌑🌕

Solar eclipses are incredible to watch — but looking directly at the sun can cause solar retinopathy, damaging the retina without any pain or immediate warning.

You may only notice blurred vision, a dark patch or changes in colour afterwards — and the damage can be permanent.

☀️ Watching the eclipse?
👓 Use proper ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses
🚫 Regular sunglasses aren’t enough
📱 Never look directly through a camera lens, binoculars or telescope
🔎 Check your eclipse glasses are undamaged

No certified glasses? A pinhole projector or livestream is the safer option.

And if your vision seems different afterwards, don’t ignore it, seek professional advice.

Optical Assistant / Dispensing Assistant

We’re looking for a friendly, organised and proactive person to join our small and supportive team at Clark Family Eyecare, Donington.

We’re looking for someone who:
✨ Has fantastic communication skills
✨ Is confident with computers and modern technology
✨ Works brilliantly as part of a team but can also use their own initiative
✨ Is organised, reliable and a good timekeeper
✨ Is enthusiastic and keen to learn

The role includes clinical administration, pre-screening, stock ordering, contact lens subscriptions and helping to ensure our patients have a smooth journey through the practice.

If you have dispensing experience, you’ll also help patients choose frames and lenses suited to their prescription, visual needs and lifestyle.

Optical experience is preferred, but full training will be given to the right person. Training will take place both in practice and externally, as well as online.

What we offer:

💷 £23,133–£27,482 depending on experience
🕐 35 hours per week
📅 4-week rota, including alternate late Wednesdays and Saturdays
🌴 28 days’ holiday including Bank Holidays
👓 Annual eye examination & spectacles
📚 Full training and ongoing development
🤝 A friendly, supportive small-team environment

Did you know an eye test can reveal more than just changes in your vision?

During a comprehensive eye examination, your optometrist isn’t just checking whether you need a new glasses prescription. They also look at the overall health of your eyes, which can sometimes show early signs of wider health conditions, such as high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol.

While an eye test doesn’t diagnose these conditions, it can highlight changes that may need further investigation by your GP.

That’s one of the many reasons why regular eye tests are so important, even if you think your vision is perfectly fine.

It’s normal for your eyes to need a few days to adjust to a new prescription, but if you’re still struggling, there could be another reason.

Some common causes include:

✔️ Your frames need adjusting and aren’t sitting correctly
✔️ Your eyes are still adapting to a prescription change
✔️ Your lenses may need checking to make sure everything is just right

The good news? It doesn’t always mean you need new glasses 👌🏻

The most satisfying part of getting new glasses…

Before any new pair of glasses reaches our clients, we carry out a series of final quality checks.

In this video, one of our directors, Annica, is using our specialist equipment to make sure everything is exactly as it should be. She’s checking that:

✔️ The prescription matches your order
✔️ The measurements are correct
✔️ The lenses are free from scratches or imperfections
✔️ Your new glasses meet our high standards before they leave us

Once we’re happy everything is perfect, we’ll give you a call to let you know your glasses are ready to collect. Then it’s time to pop into the practice, try them on, have any final adjustments made and head home with your new eyewear 😊
