As the cold weather and darker days are really beginning to take effect this week some of us may feel flat, low in energy, low in mood.
Here are some ideas to boost your wellbeing during the colder months 🍂
1. Sunlight- maximise the amount of time you spend in the natural light during the day, get outside for a walk mid day, sit near windows at home/ work.
2. Use a dawn simulator which mimics the sunrise so you aren’t getting up in the dark. SAD lightbulbs & lamps are also a good investment for regulating your body’s natural circadian rhythm and influencing brain chemicals linked to mood & sleep.
3. Routine. Keep your routine as close to normal as possible to keep your body clock stabilised.
4. Stay connected. Dark, cold evenings can make us not want to leave the house but socialising with friends, family & clubs can help alleviate isolation & low mood.
5. Cosy space. Make your home feel extra cosy with candles, fairy lights, blankets & soft furnishings.
6. Vitamin D. Our vitamin D intake can drop during the winter months as there is not as much sunlight so we can top this up with a vitamin or supplement.
7. Plan ahead. Preparing meals ahead of time and stocking the freezer can ensure we are still eating well even in those evenings we feel we’re lacking energy.
8. Wrap up well when outdoors, have warms drinks to stay warm and signal safety to the nervous system.
9. Be kind. Our bodies are naturally wintering at this time of year, it’s a natural response to want to retreat and rest more often so allow yourself to do this with kindness.
10. Check your schedule. Cut back on non essential tasks & activities.
