MRI claustrophobia is one of the most common concerns patients raise before a scan. And in most cases, Dr Toby Wells, Consultant Radiologist at Sancta Maria Hospital, says people manage it much better than they expected.

The key ingredients: time, friendly staff, and a pair of headphones. The MRI scanner is loud, but music through headphones makes it far more manageable. Depending on which part of the body is being scanned, patients may also be able to go in feet first, keeping their head outside the scanner entirely.

It’s worth pushing through the discomfort to get the right scan. And at Sancta Maria, the team takes the time to make sure patients feel supported throughout.

Cardiovascular disease prevention means taking care of your heart and metabolic health before clinical disease ever develops. And a lot of it is within your control.

Professor Julian Halcox, Consultant Cardiologist at Sancta Maria Hospital, explains that prevention starts with lifestyle: regular exercise, eating whole foods and avoiding processed ones, moderating alcohol, and not smoking. But it also means monitoring the measurable factors that drive risk over a lifetime, weight, cholesterol profile (particularly non-HDL cholesterol and triglycerides), insulin resistance and blood sugar (via tests like HbA1c), and blood pressure, which you can track at home.

Where risk is high, medications and advanced biomarker or coronary artery testing can identify and address problems before they ever become clinical.

Prevention isn’t about fear. It’s about taking control early.

Any surgery leaves a scar. But as Mr Ahmed Emam, Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Sancta Maria Hospital, explains, how a patient feels about that scar depends entirely on the transformation that came with it.

For patients who’ve undergone excess skin removal after significant weight loss, the change can be profound: feeling healthy, comfortable in their own skin, and able to do things they couldn’t do before. Scars fade over time, and for many, they become a small price for the transformation they’ve achieved.

“The scar becomes a very small price for this transformation in their lives.”

1 in 6 men in the UK will develop prostate cancer. But the number coming forward to get checked doesn’t reflect that.

The National Prostate Cancer Audit shows that around 15 to 16% of men are diagnosed with metastatic cancer, meaning it’s already spread by the time it’s first found.

Consultant Urologist, Mr Gokul KandaSwamy’s message is simple: come forward and get checked. Early diagnosis makes all the difference.

Modern anaesthesia involves far more than simply putting a patient to sleep.

Dr Claire-Louise Ware, Consultant Anaesthetist at Sancta Maria Hospital, explains how depth of anaesthesia monitoring works: a small sensor on the patient’s forehead tracks brainwave activity throughout surgery, allowing the anaesthetic team to precisely control how deeply asleep a patient is.

Thirty years ago, this technology simply didn’t exist. Today, it’s one of several advances that have significantly improved the safety of general anaesthetic.

Many women don’t realise perimenopause has begun, because it rarely announces itself clearly.

Dr Sandar Hlaing, GP and menopause expert at Sancta Maria Hospital, explains that as the ovaries begin to decline, they don’t do so steadily. Some months they function, some months they don’t, which is why the signs can be so subtle and inconsistent.

You might notice changes in your periods, becoming more easily upset or irritable, feeling more sensitive to temperature, tiring more easily, or finding your mind isn’t quite as sharp as it used to be. These small shifts, that sense of being less resilient than before, are so often put down to stress or age.

Perimenopause typically begins around 40, but Dr Hlaing is clear: it has no strict age limit. If these changes sound familiar, it’s worth exploring.
