In rugby, shaking off an injury is almost a point of pride. But some injuries have a deadline. 🏉

Mr Dougie Russell, Consultant Orthopaedic Hand & Wrist Surgeon at Sancta Maria Hospital in Swansea, describes one of the most common presentations he sees in this part of Wales — a tear to the ligament between the scaphoid and lunate bones in the wrist, often sustained on the pitch and dismissed as a sprain.

The problem is timing. That ligament can be repaired within the first four to six weeks. After that window closes, repair is no longer an option and reconstructive surgery becomes necessary. Leave it longer still, and a very predictable pattern of wrist arthritis sets in.

An injury that felt minor can become a much more significant problem — simply because it was not seen early enough.
If you have had a wrist injury that has not fully settled, it is worth getting it properly assessed sooner rather than later.

Vertigo, dizziness, feeling off-balance, whatever you’re experiencing, you don’t have to just put up with it. 🌀

Mr Ameeth Sanu, Consultant ENT Surgeon at Sancta Maria Hospital, explains that the first step is simply to see your GP. If things haven’t settled after that initial appointment, it’s worth getting expert input, whether that’s from an ear specialist or a neurologist.

Your GP can help guide you to the right person. But the most important thing is this: if your symptoms are getting in the way of your everyday life, that’s reason enough to seek support.

You know your body. Trust it.
