As Wegovy® pill prescriptions surpass 3 million, 1 filled roughly every 5 seconds, BANT renews its call to policy makers, health care leaders and regulatory bodies to ensure that anti-obesity medications (AOMs) are used safely, effectively and sustainably.

In a joint statement issued with the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine and CNM College of Naturopathic Medicine, BANt called for adequate safeguards and wraparound care for individuals using GLP-1 medications to include:

✅assessing nutritional state before, during and after treatment

✅assessing the drivers of obesity in an individualised and holistic way covering sleep quality, physical activity, sedentary behaviour, harmful substances (smoking/alcohol/drugs/prescribed medicines that cause weight gain), social isolation, mental wellbeing and nutrition

✅creating a person-centred care plan that asks, “what matters most to you right now about your health?”

✅creating an individualised and supported plan that draws on available community support and the wider primary care multi-disciplinary team that can include nurses, pharmacists, dietitians, nutritional therapy practitioners, health coaches, mental health workers and social prescribing link workers

✅a personalised follow-up plan including a plan for medication down-titration as required following rapid weight loss e.g. how to monitor blood sugar, blood pressure, side effects of medications affected by weight loss such as blood sugar lowering medicines, lithium, anti-coagulants, anti-hypertensives, anti-psychotics

What if one of the most powerful foods for emotional well-being is sitting in your pantry?

Flaxseed has long been valued for its omega-3 fats, fiber, and phytoestrogenic lignans. Now researchers are exploring another possibility: its connection to the oxytocin signaling pathway.

Oxytocin is often called the "love hormone," but its effects extend far beyond social bonding. It influences stress regulation, emotional resilience, and feelings of safety and connection.

In a recent molecular network analysis, flaxseed appeared to influence genes involved in oxytocin signaling and calcium-dependent communication pathways linked to anxiety regulation.

While more research is needed, I find these findings especially compelling because they reinforce a theme I've seen throughout nutrition science: Food doesn't simply nourish tissues. It shapes communication networks throughout the body.

From hormones to neurotransmitters to immune signaling, every meal is part of an ongoing conversation with our biology.

Perhaps one more reason to sprinkle a tablespoon of freshly ground flaxseed into your day. 🌱✨
