Funeral Fact Friday!

Have you ever wondered what the difference is between a coffin and a casket?
Although we often use the words interchangeably, there is actually a difference.
A traditional coffin has 6 sides, with a wider shoulder area that tapers towards the head and feet.
A casket, on the other hand, is rectangular, with 4 sides and a more uniform shape.
So next time you hear someone use the two words, you’ll know there’s more to it than just a different name.
Happy Friday 😀

The team at Andrew Grey Funeral Directors were proud to welcome more than 55 people to our Macmillan Coffee Morning at The Burn Inn, Houghton-le-Spring, raising an incredible £750 for Macmillan Cancer Support through coffee, cakes, raffles and community spirit.

For the team, the most rewarding aspect was seeing so many people come together for a worthy cause, while giving something back to a charity that means so much to many of the families they support.

A big thank you to everyone who attended, donated and supported the event.

After an astonishing 68 years in the funeral profession, beginning in 1958 and joining the Walker & Morrell family in 2002, Jack has now retired. Throughout his career, he has supported countless families with compassion, professionalism and kindness, making a lasting difference to the communities he served.

We would all like to thank Jack for his years of dedicated service, friendship and commitment. His contribution to both the profession and local communities has been invaluable, and his presence will be greatly missed.

⚰️ FUNERAL FACT FRIDAY – Why do we have coffins? 🤔
Have you ever wondered why we use coffins when someone dies?
The tradition of placing the deceased in a coffin goes back thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians used beautifully decorated coffins and sarcophagi, believing they helped protect the body on its journey into the afterlife.
Over time, coffins became more widely used for practical reasons, helping to protect and transport the deceased, as well as providing a dignified way to lay someone to rest.
Today, coffins come in all sorts of styles, materials and finishes, from traditional wooden designs to more contemporary and environmentally friendly options. 🌿
At Woking Funeral Service, we understand that choosing a coffin is a very personal decision, and we’re always here to help families find something that feels just right for their loved one. ❤️
Did you know? The word coffin comes from the Greek word kophinos, meaning basket!

Funeral fact Friday! ⚰️
Did you know that in Victorian Britain, black wasn’t always the only colour associated with mourning?
During the strictest periods of Victorian mourning, widows were expected to wear black for up to 2 years after their husband‘s death. But mourning actually changed in stages.
After a period of deep mourning, a widow could move into “ half mourning “ when colours such as white, grey, mauve and lavender became acceptable.
Even jewellery had mourning rules. Jewellery made from jet - a lightweight black fossilised wood- became hugely fashionable because it was considered particularly appropriate for mourning.

⚰️ This week’s Funeral Fact Friday

Did you know… the word “funeral” comes from the Latin word funus, meaning both “funeral” AND “death”?
The word travelled through Old French before eventually becoming the English “funeral” we use today.
And here’s the lovely bit: the traditions surrounding funerals have been around for thousands of years. Long before modern funeral directors existed, communities had their own ways of caring for the dead and saying goodbye. 🕊️
So although the funeral profession has changed enormously over the centuries, the need to honour and remember someone after they die is one of the oldest human traditions there is.
Funeral Fact Friday 💐
Every week, a little fact from the fascinating world of funerals.

⚰️🚂 FUNERAL FACT FRIDAY – FACT #1 🚂⚰️
Well, here we go… our very first Funeral Fact Friday!
And I thought we’d start with something rather fascinating — and something right on our doorstep here in Woking.
Did you know that Brookwood Cemetery once had its very own railway?
When Brookwood Cemetery opened in 1854, London was struggling to find enough space to bury its growing population. So a huge new cemetery was created here in Surrey — and because it was a little too far from London for the funeral parties to travel easily, a special railway was built.
The London Necropolis Railway ran from a dedicated station near Waterloo, carrying both coffins and mourners all the way to Brookwood.
And it gets even more interesting… 🚂
There were two railway stations inside the cemetery itself — one serving the Anglican section and one serving the non-conformist section.
The trains even had separate carriages for coffins and passengers, with different classes available, just as there were different classes of funeral.
The railway continued until 1941, when the London terminus was badly damaged during an air raid.
So next time you’re passing Brookwood Cemetery, just remember…
you’re passing what was once the destination of a very unusual railway — connecting London with its great cemetery here in Woking . ⚰️🚂

Good afternoon everyone! ☀️

Debbie and I would like to wish everyone involved in, and attending, the Horsell Village Show tomorrow a wonderful day. We’re certainly in for some glorious summer weather, so we hope everyone manages to stay cool while enjoying what promises to be another fantastic day.

The Horsell Village Show is one of the real highlights of our community calendar, alongside the wonderful Horsell Christmas Fair and the many other events that bring our village together throughout the year. It’s occasions like these that remind us what a fantastic community we’re so fortunate to be part of.

We’re really looking forward to coming along tomorrow and hope to see lots of familiar faces.

Have a fantastic day everyone 😀
