A home is more than four walls and a key.
Moving into a property can be one of the most overwhelming experiences for someone who has been homeless for a long time. Securing accommodation is a huge achievement, but for many people, that's where the support ends.
Most of us take everyday tasks for granted, but for someone starting over, they can feel incredibly overwhelming:
Setting up gas and electricity accounts.
Knowing when the bins are collected.
Learning how to use a washing machine.
Developing basic cooking skills.
Understanding how to clean and maintain a home.
Learning essential life skills such as ironing.
Arranging broadband and other household services.
These are all essential parts of maintaining a tenancy, yet they're often overlooked.
The last few days have really made me reflect on this. Helping someone secure a property is only the first step—helping them keep it is just as important.
I have a fantastic relationship with MBW Lettings, and they are amazing with their tenants. They genuinely care about the people they house and set an example that I believe other letting agencies should follow. However, there is still a wider lack of practical support available for people moving into accommodation after experiencing homelessness.
Going forward, I will personally be supporting the gentleman we've been working with, as well as anyone else who needs a bit of guidance. Whether it's showing someone how to use a washing machine, helping them understand household responsibilities, or simply being there to answer the questions many of us wouldn't think twice about, I'm committed to helping people build the confidence and skills they need to sustain their tenancy.
Due to safeguarding policies, I cannot provide advice on personal finances, benefits, or budgeting. However, I can offer practical support with the everyday tasks that make the difference between simply having a house and creating a home.
Everyone deserves more than just a roof over their head. They deserve the support, knowledge, and confidence to build a future and make that house a home.
