EARLIER this month, the 21st Chinese Medical Team held a successful specialty medical outreach in Yarrowkabra, Soesdyke/Linden Highway, where scores of locals benefitted from free medical care.

The medical team described the event as a resounding demonstration of bilateral co-operation and humanitarian service. The comprehensive medical outreach held at the Yarrowkabra Health Post provided critical healthcare services to residents.

Traditional Chinese Medicine Culture Welcomed at the University of Guyana

On June 13, the 21st China medical team to Guyana and the Confucius Institute at the University of Guyana jointly hosted a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) culture experience event.

The unique event attracted over 50 local faculty members and students to experience the charm of traditional Chinese medicine and culture firsthand.

TCM experts Wei Jie and Wei Haoyang from the 21st China medical team served as the keynote speakers for the cultural session.

They introduced the profound history of TCM and explained the basic principles of traditional therapies like acupuncture and cupping.

Following the informative lecture, the medical experts performed live demonstrations, earning high praise for their medical skills.

Free Medical Outreach in Yarrowkabra!

The 21st China Medical Team recently conducted a comprehensive, free medical outreach at the Yarrowkabra Health Post .
Led by general surgeon Dr. Li Huansong, the multi-disciplinary team featured specialists in general and plastic surgery, internal medicine, orthopedics, gynecology, TCM, public health, and ophthalmology.
Residents also benefited from free blood pressure and blood glucose monitoring, alongside an educational lecture focused on chronic disease management and preventative health.
This successful initiative reflects the 21st China medical team's ongoing commitment to deepening cooperation and fostering close friendship between Guyana and China.

At the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), the Plastic Surgery Department is transforming lives through specialized reconstructive care that goes far beyond cosmetic procedures. Focused on restoring function, appearance, and quality of life, the department provides critical care to patients with complex conditions.

This department, headed by Dr. Shilindra Rajkumar, offers a wide range of services including burn management, reconstruction, skin grafting, wound care, scar revision, and reconstructive surgery following accidents, cancer treatment, or severe infections. The team also manages congenital conditions such as cleft lip and palate, syndactyly, and other soft tissue abnormalities.

The Plastic Surgery Department has grown significantly over the years. What began as a limited burn care service managed by visiting Chinese plastic surgeons and supported by the Canadian North charity organization has evolved into a permanent and expanding specialty service. The department now operates regular outpatient clinics twice weekly and conducts two operating theatre sessions each week, while also contributing to medical education and training in Guyana.

Among its most remarkable achievements are independently performing cleft surgeries, reducing burn mortality, and introducing advanced reconstructive procedures such as breast reconstruction using microvascular free tissue transfer. The department has also successfully used innovative techniques including fish skin grafts and parental donor skin grafts to save severely burned children.

Today, the department is staffed by a dedicated team of eight doctors, including one consultant, three registrars, and four medical officers, who work together to provide specialized care with an emphasis on burn treatment and soft tissue reconstruction.
The team continues to strengthen its international partnerships through organizations such as Smiletrain, BFIRST, and IMANA, while presenting its academic work at regional conferences including CCOS and CAPRAS.

Looking ahead, the department aims to become a regional centre of excellence in burn care and microvascular surgery reconstruction. Plans are also underway to establish a skin bank, expand training opportunities, and graduate Guyana’s first locally trained plastic surgeons.
