NWRA staff Caroline McGowan, John Daly and Cora Keane were delighted to have attended the latest RuralProof project Interregional Meeting in Greece.

One of the highlights of the meeting was the Good Practices Market Workshop a creative and interactive session where partners first presented their Good Practices and then took part in a lively ‘match-making’ activity.

Participants were invited to ‘buy’ their favourite Good Practices on the RuralProof Market and respond to questions, sparking great conversations, fresh ideas, and valuable exchanges between regions. It was a fantastic opportunity to hear about inspiring initiatives and connect with partners working on similar rural challenges across Europe.

The workshop created a dynamic space for collaboration and reflection, and we hope the feedback and discussions generated will help strengthen and further develop our Good Practices later this year.

Tune in this evening for a very special episode of Nationwide on RTE 1 at 7pm as they celebrate the 40th anniversary of the official opening of the airport.

Forty years ago, on a foggy, boggy hillside in County Mayo, an extraordinary dream became reality when the first commercial flights departed from Knock Airport. It was the bold vision of local parish priest Monsignor James Horan, who, against all the odds, built an airport close to Knock Shrine.

To mark the 40th anniversary of Ireland's fourth-busiest airport, presenter Colm Flynn tells the remarkable story of Monsignor Horan and the runway that transformed the west of Ireland. Nationwide sees how the airport has grown over four decades, now serving hundreds of thousands of passengers each year and welcoming notable visitors including Pope Francis and U.S. President Joe Biden. Nationwide also meets the people who keep the airport running today, some of whom have been there since day one.

📸 Photo Competition – Final Weeks to Enter

There are just two weeks left to enter the Our Ireland, Our EU Photo Competition.

We’re inviting people across Ireland to share photographs that capture everyday places, projects or activities supported through EU funding from community spaces and education initiatives to local developments and public facilities.

How to take part:
• Submit a photo of a project, place or activity
• Open to all, amateur and experienced photographers welcome
• Entry is quick and online

The competition is about highlighting local experiences and perspectives however big or small.

NWRA EU Projects Officer, Fiona Timoney, was pleased to represent the NWRA at the Community Workshop recently held for the EUI Waterway project. It was great to see the local community so interested and engaged in the opportunities the project may provide, in relation to hydro-electricity along Galway’s canals.

The NWRA is particularly focused in the re-purposing of old infrastructure, replacing old water pumping equipment with new hydro-electric technology and examining the opportunities of reinvesting surplus electricity into further climate action initiatives. The Waterway project is an European Urban Initiative project, led by Galway City Council and co-funded by the European Union.

The NWRA were delighted to host the GREENHEALTH-Interreg Europe regional closing event in Buncranna, Co Donegal on the 25th of February 2026

The event highlighted good practices in the form of Ireland’s Slow Adventure model and collaborative approaches to support wellbeing, tourism, and environmental care.

A key challenge noted was the balance between the benefits of greater access to nature and the need to preserve biodiversity for future generations.

Takeaway: Cooperation and inclusive planning are vital to keep natural spaces protected and accessible for all. 🌿💚
