World Stroke Day: Why recognising a change in someone's condition matters.

Today is World Stroke Day, an opportunity to remind ourselves of the importance of recognising the signs of stroke and acting promptly.

Sudden facial weakness, arm weakness or speech difficulties can be warning signs. Remember BeFAST: Balance, eyes, Face, Arms, Speech, Time to call 112 or 999 in Ireland.

For care teams, recognising changes in a person's condition and following emergency procedures are essential aspects of safe support.

Moving and handling decisions must also reflect a person's current condition and care needs.

Share this reminder with someone working in care. Awareness and timely action matter.

Would you know what to look for before a moving and handling task begins?

Care Supervisors and care managers have a hard job to do when it comes to risk assessing tasks for vulnerable service users!

Safe moving and handling starts before the task itself.

A useful reminder for care teams:

• Review the individual's current care plan and assessment.
• Check that the selected equipment is appropriate.
• Follow the manufacturer's instructions and workplace procedures.
• Make sure the environment is suitable for the task.
• Communicate clearly with the person and everyone involved.

This is not about rushing through a checklist. It is about making informed decisions that support safe, dignified care.

At GROW Training, practical knowledge is at the heart of what we do.

“The moving and handling myth we need to challenge: one technique suits everyone.”

**MYTH: One moving and handling technique will work for everyone.**

**FACT: Safe practice must be individualised.**

Every person has different needs, abilities and circumstances. Staff must follow the individual's care plan, relevant assessments, equipment instructions and workplace procedures.

Good moving and handling training helps staff understand why the correct approach matters, rather than simply memorising a sequence of steps.

At GROW Training, we want care professionals to understand the principles behind their practice.

“A hoist is a piece of equipment. Knowing how to use it safely is a skill.”

A hoist is not simply a piece of equipment to switch on and operate.

Safe moving and handling requires staff to understand the individual care plan, the equipment selected, the appropriate sling and the correct procedures for the person they are supporting.

The right approach depends on the individual, their needs and the equipment being used.

At GROW Training, we focus on practical learning that reflects the realities of care.

“Good care starts with the basics. Are we giving them enough attention?”

This week is International Infection Prevention Week, a timely reminder that safe care is built on consistent everyday practices.

Infection prevention is not just the responsibility of one designated person. Everyone working in care has a role to play.

From following hand hygiene procedures to using equipment appropriately and adhering to workplace protocols, the small things matter.

At GROW Training, we believe that effective learning must connect with the real working environment.

What practical steps does your organisation take to keep good practice at the forefront of care?

When was the last time you checked whether your staff training was translating into everyday practice?

For nursing homes and home care providers, training is about more than attendance sheets and certificates.

It is worth asking:

✔️ Does training reflect the realities of your care setting?

✔️ Are staff confident using the equipment they encounter?

✔️ Are practical skills being assessed appropriately?

✔️ Are your training priorities aligned with your organisation's needs?

At GROW Training, we believe relevant, practical training is an investment in your staff and the people they support.

💜 World Alzheimer’s Day | 21 September 💜

Today is about more than a diagnosis.

It’s about the person who is still there.

The mum who may forget your name but still knows the comfort of your voice.

The dad who tells the same story for the tenth time, and still deserves to be listened to.

The partner who is learning how to care for someone they love while quietly grieving the changes they are seeing.

The family member who is exhausted, worried, frustrated and sometimes feels guilty for feeling that way.

Alzheimer’s doesn’t just affect memory. It can change relationships, routines, communication and the way families experience everyday life.

And this is why understanding matters.

At Grow Training, we believe that training isn't simply about gaining knowledge. It’s about building confidence, compassion and understanding so that the people we support are treated with dignity , not defined by their diagnosis.

Sometimes the most important thing we can do is slow down.

Listen.

Be patient.

Meet someone where they are.

And remember the person, not just the condition.

💜 Today, and every day, let’s choose understanding over frustration, dignity over assumptions, and compassion over judgement.

Because behind every diagnosis is a person with a lifetime of memories, relationships, experiences and stories that deserve to be valued.

World Alzheimer’s Day 2026, remember the person, not just the diagnosis.

A New Chapter

To everyone receiving their Leaving Cert results today, well done. 🎓

Today might feel like a day that defines your future, but it really doesn’t.

For some, there will be celebrations and the course or career path they hoped for. For others, there may be disappointment, uncertainty, or a feeling of “what do I do now?”

And that’s okay.

Your Leaving Cert results are one part of your journey, they don't determine your potential, your work ethic, your ability to learn, or the person you will become.

As you start thinking about college, apprenticeships, further education, employment or other opportunities, remember that planning for your future doesn't have to mean having your whole life figured out at 18.

Sometimes the best career paths are the ones we discover along the way.

Take time to think about what interests you, what you're good at, what kind of environment you want to work in and, perhaps most importantly, what kind of life and future you want to build.

There are so many routes into a career, and there is always an opportunity to learn something new, change direction and grow.

So today, celebrate what you've achieved, be kind to yourself, and look forward to what comes next.

Your results are a milestone, not a definition of your future.

From all of us at GROW Training, congratulations to the Class of 2026. We wish you every success in whatever comes next.
