What actually happens during an adult ADHD assessment? 🧠

For many people, the idea of getting assessed can feel daunting, especially when you don’t know what to expect.

In this video, Dr. Shaeraine Raaj, Consultant Psychiatrist and founder of MindBridge Medical, explains what happens during an adult ADHD assessment and how clinicians build a complete picture of your experiences, symptoms and history.

An assessment is about more than ticking boxes, it’s about understanding you as an individual and identifying the right support moving forward.

Are you lazy… or could there be more going on? 🧠

Struggling with motivation, procrastination or getting started on everyday tasks can sometimes be associated with ADHD and difficulties with executive functioning and it isn’t always as simple as “trying harder.”

In this video, Dr. Shaeraine Raaj, Consultant Psychiatrist and founder of MindBridge Medical, breaks down 3 signs that what looks like laziness could actually be worth understanding further.

Of course, experiencing these signs doesn’t necessarily mean you have ADHD, a proper assessment looks at the bigger picture.

Sometimes understanding the “why” behind your behaviour is the first step.

An assessment isn’t simply about reaching a diagnosis. It’s about understanding your experiences, strengths, challenges and needs and gaining greater clarity about yourself moving forward.

AUTISM & SENSORY OVERLOAD

WHEN THE WORLD FEELS TOO MUCH

Sensory overload happens when the brain receives more sensory information than it can comfortably process.

COMMON TRIGGERS

* 🔊 Loud sounds
* 💡 Bright lights
* 👥 Crowded places
* 👃 Strong smells
* 👕 Certain textures
* 📱 Too much information

It’s not “overreacting.” The brain is overwhelmed.
The brain is WAYS TO REDUCE THE LOAD

* 🎧 Reduce noise
Earphones or quieter spaces
* 🌿 Take a break
Step somewhere calm
* 💡 Control lighting
Lower bright lights
* 🧸 Use familiar comforts
Textures or objects that feel safe
* 🗓️ Plan ahead
Know what to expect

Small changes can make a big difference.

Understanding sensory needs is part of understanding autism.

Does everyone diagnosed with ADHD need medication? 🧠

The short answer is no, ADHD treatment isn’t one-size-fits-all.

In this video, MindBridge Medical founder and Consultant Psychiatrist Dr. Shaeraine Raaj explains his holistic approach to ADHD management, looking beyond medication alone.

Lifestyle changes, appropriate evidence-based therapies and other supportive strategies can all form part of an individualised treatment plan, with medication considered where clinically appropriate.

The goal isn’t simply to treat a diagnosis. It’s to find the right combination of support for the individual.

Autism in adults doesn’t always look the way you might expect. 🧠

For many people, autistic traits may have gone unrecognised for years, particularly when they’ve learned to mask, adapt or develop ways of navigating situations they find challenging.

In this video, Dr. Jean McCabe, Senior Psychologist at MindBridge Medical, explores what autism can look like in adulthood and why every person’s experience of autism is different.

Understanding starts with looking beyond the stereotypes.

What do you think—at what stage of life might someone with ADHD need support?
Earlier this year, MindBridge Medical took to Grafton Street to hear people’s views and understanding of ADHD. One important message stood out: ADHD affects everyone differently.
Many people with ADHD develop effective strategies, build successful careers and thrive in their personal and professional lives. Others may find that their symptoms become more difficult to manage during times of increased demands or change—such as starting university, entering the workplace, becoming a parent, experiencing relationship difficulties or facing changes later in life.
An ADHD diagnosis does not automatically mean medication. Support should be individualised and may include education, practical strategies, psychological support, workplace or educational adjustments, lifestyle changes and, where clinically appropriate, medication.
The right support depends on the person, their circumstances and the impact ADHD is having on their life.
What are your thoughts? At what point in life do you think someone with ADHD may need additional support?
