If you feel like your teenager is constantly arguing, ignoring you, talking back, or challenging every boundary, you’re not alone.
Adolescence is a time of growing independence. Your child is learning to have their own opinions, make decisions, and establish their identity. But understanding their behavior doesn’t mean accepting disrespect.
Try to:
💜 Stay calm. Avoid turning every disagreement into a power struggle.
💜 Set clear boundaries. Your teenager needs to know what behavior is acceptable and what isn’t.
💜 Be consistent. Rules and consequences should be predictable, reasonable, and related to the behavior.
💜 Listen before correcting. Sometimes behind anger or defiance there is frustration, anxiety, insecurity, or a need for more independence.
💜 Choose your battles. Not every disagreement needs to become an argument.
💜 Focus on the behaviour, not the child. Instead of “You are so disrespectful,” try: “I’m willing to listen, but I won’t continue this conversation while we are speaking to each other disrespectfully.”
From a behavioural perspective, we also want to understand what happens before and after the behaviour. What triggers the conflict? What does your teenager gain or avoid? And how do adults respond?
Because changing behaviour starts with understanding its function.
And remember: setting boundaries and maintaining connection can happen at the same time. 🦋
You don’t have to choose between being your teenager’s parent and being someone they feel safe with. 💜
