Had an interesting presentation in clinic this week 👇

16 weeks post patellar stabilisation, working into deep squat… and there’s a clear lateral “shift” or subluxation happening around the fibular head on the way down.

Curious what others are seeing here:
– Biceps femoris tendon snapping?
– Proximal tib-fib joint instability?
– Something else?

No pain reported, but very obvious visually.

Would love thoughts from anyone who’s seen similar 👇

Two proud Letterkenny men are taking on an incredible challenge – running 50km to raise vital funds for autism services across Donegal!

Mark Rodgers and his son Jamie are pushing their limits for local autism charities, including iCare Donegal, Bluestack Foundation, and Letterkenny Autism Support Group. Every euro will help families and children in our community get the support they need. Every cent goes to the charities.

If you can, please support this brilliant father-and-son effort – every donation makes a huge difference! 💙

Feel free to add a photo of the runners or the GoFundMe page for better reach! Let me know if you’d like a slightly different tone or length.

You’re not slowing down in HYROX because you’re unfit.

You’re slowing down because your body can’t keep running efficiently under fatigue.

Most HYROX training is built around:

- High reps
- Circuits
- Conditioning

And yes — that gets you through the race.

But it doesn’t build what actually keeps you fast.

👇

Your calf complex (your soleus + gastroc) is responsible for:

- Propelling you forward every step
- Storing and releasing energy like a spring
- Keeping your running efficient when fatigue hits

If that system isn’t strong and reactive enough…

👉 Your ground contact time increases
👉 Your stride loses “bounce”
👉 Your energy expenditure goes up

And suddenly… you’re working harder just to hold the same pace.

That’s why two athletes with similar fitness can have completely different race times.

One is efficient.
One is leaking energy every step.

This is exactly what we test
✔️ Calf strength (force production)
✔️ Reactive strength (RSI)
✔️ How well you absorb & re-produce force

Because most HYROX athletes are well-conditioned…
…but underdeveloped where it actually matters.

The good news?
You don’t need to overhaul your training.

Small, targeted changes can massively improve how you run — especially under fatigue.

Stay tuned — I’ll show you how to test and improve this 👊

Are you actually training right for HYROX? đź‘€

Most athletes focus on strength, circuits, and suffering…
But have you really looked at your running?

Because here’s the reality 👇
Your running can account for a huge chunk of your race result — and it’s often the first thing to fall apart under fatigue. Up to 40% of race time difference in the elite top 50 is attributable to run times.

And one of the biggest missing pieces?
👉 Your calf complex

If you can’t produce force through your calves, you lose:

Propulsion
Efficiency
And ultimately… time

This is where most HYROX athletes are leaving performance on the table.

Stay tuned — I’ll be showing you exactly how we test:
- Calf strength
- Reactive Strength Index (RSI)
- lower limb peak power

…and how you compare 👊

Putting my questionable squat technique to good use on the VALD ForceDecks đź‘€

This test uses dual force plates to measure exactly how much force each leg produces as you lower and drive out of a squat. So even if the squat is a bit suspect… the data still tells a story.

A few key metrics we look at:

Max Eccentric Peak Force – the highest force produced while the muscles are lengthening during the lowering phase of the squat. This tells us how well someone can control and absorb load.

Max Concentric Peak Force – the highest force produced while the muscles are shortening as you drive up from the squat. Essentially, how much force you can produce to stand up.

Max Concentric Mean Force – the average force produced throughout the upward phase, giving insight into overall force output, not just a single peak moment.

Why does this matter?
These metrics help us identify side-to-side asymmetries, strength deficits, and compensation patterns — crucial for injury rehab and return-to-play decisions.

In healthy athletes, they also provide objective data to track strength, power, and performance over time.

Squat testing isn’t just about how low you go — it’s about how you move 📊

Using VALD ForceDecks, we can break your squat down into real, measurable data to spot weaknesses, imbalances, and opportunities to improve performance or reduce injury risk.

Whether you’re rehabbing an injury or looking to move better and get stronger, objective testing helps guide the plan — no guesswork.
