🏆 The 2026 Ig Nobel Prizes! Chemistry recognised work showing that milk proteins from viviparous cockroaches pack three times the energy of cow’s milk proteins. Technology went to researchers who turned mosquito proboscises into high-resolution 3D-printing nozzles. Soil Science rewarded a global experiment using buried cotton underwear to reveal biological activity in soil.

🧩 What does training in AI for healthcare need to cover today?

🔬 GeMAIHc 2027 will offer a broad view of current methods and questions: generative modelling, multimodal data integration, large language models, clinical natural language processing, medical image synthesis and analysis, evaluation, robustness, validation, ethics and regulation.

🧫 How are stem cell core facilities reshaping biomedical research?

🔬 A new Perspective in Stem Cell Reports, co-authored by our Giovanni Faga, Head of National Facility for Genome Engineering & Disease Modelling, and our Jacopo Zasso, Senior Technician, explores their growing impact on biomedical research.

🧬 What if we could uncover more human genomic diversity from data once too difficult to analyse?

🔎 Our researchers from Soranzo Group with Davide Bolognini developed COSIGT, a new pangenome-based pipeline that accurately detects structural genomic variation even in low-coverage sequencing data, outperforming existing approaches.

🌍 Tested on thousands of modern and ancient human genomes, COSIGT opens population-scale analyses to biobanks, historical datasets and ancient DNA, helping reveal more of the diversity written into our genomes.

🧬 Can the mutations written into our cells reveal where carcinogen exposures are happening around the world?

🔬 On 1 October, Professor Sir Michael Stratton, Senior Group Leader at Wellcome Sanger Institute, joins HT Seminars: Connecting Discoveries for “Global surveillance of carcinogen exposures using somatic mutations”.

🌍 His work has helped shape cancer genomics, from BRCA2 and BRAF to the framework of mutational signatures. The seminar brings the scientific community together to connect perspectives and explore what these genomic traces can reveal about cancer causation.
