Your visit doesn't end when you walk out the door. Here's what to expect once your appointment is over.

If you had any tests done, results are typically emailed within a few days, timing can vary depending on the test, and your doctor will go over what they mean once they're in.

If your doctor referred you to a specialist, we'll help coordinate that referral and the next steps for booking.

Your doctor will let you know if a follow-up appointment is needed, whether that's to review results, check on treatment, or follow up on ongoing symptoms. If you need to book one, just give reception a call or write to us on WhatsApp.

If anything else comes up after you've left, whether it's a question about your results or anything else, call reception and we'll help.

Coming in for your first appointment with us? A little preparation goes a long way toward making your visit smooth and efficient.

Bring a valid ID or passport with you. If you have insurance, send us your card or policy details when you book, so we can check your coverage in advance rather than sorting it out on the day.

If you're coming in for a specific concern, it helps to bring any relevant medical history, previous test results, or a list of medications you're currently taking. If you've been referred by another doctor, bring that referral letter too.

Not sure if something's relevant? Bring it anyway. It's easier for your doctor to set something aside than to work without information that might have mattered.

A trip abroad exposes your body to things it doesn't encounter at home, different food and water, insects, climates, and disease patterns. Here's what's actually worth doing once you're back.

Finish any antimalarial course you started, even after you're home. Some need to be continued for up to four weeks after leaving a risk area, and stopping early defeats the purpose of taking them at all. Check the packet or your prescribing doctor's instructions rather than assuming you're done.

Wash all your travel clothes and luggage liner on a hot cycle, especially if you stayed in hostels, budget accommodation, or spent time in areas with a higher risk of bedbugs or lice. It's a low-effort step that prevents you from unknowingly bringing anything home with you, and heat on the dryer afterward matters too, since that's what actually kills eggs and larvae.

Get seen promptly if you develop a fever after returning, especially within a few weeks of travel to a malaria or dengue risk area. This isn't something to schedule for later in the week, it's worth contacting a doctor the same day the fever starts.

Get any bites or skin reactions checked if they're still inflamed, spreading, or not healing a week or more after you're back.

Refill or resume any regular medication you paused while travelling, and don't let it lapse further while you settle back in.

Book a routine check-up you'd been putting off. Coming back from a trip is a natural reset point, and it's an easy moment to finally get to it.

If any of this applies to you, reach out rather than waiting to see how you feel.

Learning a language for everyday life is one thing, learning it for healthcare is another. A handful of the right phrases can turn a stressful moment into a manageable one, so here are some worth having ready before you need them.

Here are some useful expressions you can use when you visit the pharmacy.

"Avete ___?" means "Do you have ___?":

• Avete un cerotto? (Do you have a plaster/band-aid?)
• Avete antidolorifici? (Do you have painkillers?)
• Avete qualcosa per il mal di testa? (Do you have something for a headache?)
• Avete acqua? (Do you have water?)

"Ho bisogno di ___" means "I need ___." Some useful ways to finish it:

• Ho bisogno di un appuntamento (I need an appointment)
• Ho bisogno di antidolorifici (I need painkillers)
• Ho bisogno di una ricetta (I need a prescription)
• Ho bisogno di un medico (I need a doctor)

"Mi fa male ___" means "___ hurts." Pair it with pointing if the word doesn't come to you:

• Mi fa male la testa (My head hurts)
• Mi fa male la gola (My throat hurts)
• Mi fa male qui (It hurts here)
• Mi fa male lo stomaco (My stomach hurts)

"Sono allergico/a a ___" means "I'm allergic to ___," one of the most important phrases to have ready:

• Sono allergico/a alla penicillina (I'm allergic to penicillin)
• Sono allergico/a al lattice (I'm allergic to latex)

"Prendo ___" means "I take ___," useful for listing medications:

• Prendo la pillola (I take the pill / birth control)
• Prendo farmaci per la pressione (I take blood pressure medication)

And if all else fails: "Può parlare inglese, per favore?" - "Can you speak English, please?" Always a fine thing to ask.

You don't need any of this at FirstMed, where care comes in your own language. But having a few phrases ready can make life easier everywhere else in Italy too.

Want care entirely in your own language instead? Book your appointment with FirstMed today. Link in the comments.

Getting a blood test soon? Here's everything you need to know before you come in.
Whether you need to fast depends on the specific test your doctor has ordered.

Some tests require fasting for several hours beforehand, while others don't need any preparation at all. If you're not sure, just ask when you book, and our team will let you know exactly what to do.

The test itself is quick, usually just a few minutes from start to finish. Our team will talk you through it as we go, so you know what to expect at every step.

Your blood is processed the same day, and results are typically emailed within 1 to 2 working days, though timing can vary depending on the type of test. Your doctor will go over what your results mean and explain any next steps, whether that's reassurance, a follow-up test, or a referral.

We know blood tests can feel routine one moment and worrying the next, especially while you're waiting on results. Our team is here to make the process as clear and straightforward as possible, from your first question to your last.

Bug bites are pretty much unavoidable once summer hits, especially with more time spent outdoors. Here's what to do if one catches you off guard.

Start by cleaning the area gently with soap and water. A cold compress helps bring down any swelling and takes the edge off the itching, and it's worth keeping the area clean and dry while it heals. As tempting as it is, try not to scratch. It usually only makes the itching worse and increases the chance of infection.

Most bites settle on their own within a few days. Keep an eye out for signs that it's more than a normal reaction: spreading redness, increasing pain or swelling, warmth around the area, or a fever. Those are signs worth getting checked rather than waiting out.

If you notice difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or dizziness after a bite, that's a medical emergency. Seek help immediately rather than waiting to see if it passes.

For anything in between, uncertain, uncomfortable, or just not settling the way you'd expect, our team is here to take a look.

Today is World Mosquito Day, and there's more to it than an itchy summer nuisance.

Mosquitoes are one of the most effective disease carriers in the world, capable of spreading illnesses like malaria and dengue, particularly for anyone who's traveled somewhere with a higher risk. Even at home, bites can occasionally lead to more than a bit of irritation, especially if scratched or left unchecked.

A few habits go a long way. Use repellent when you're outdoors in the evening, cover up if you're somewhere mosquitoes are active, and try to resist scratching a bite even when it's tempting, since that's often what turns a minor bite into something worse.

A safe community starts with prevention, and that goes for your own health too. If a bite isn't healing the way it should, or something feels off after travel, don't wait it out.

Today is World Humanitarian Day, a moment to recognize the people who spend their lives supporting others, often in the world's most difficult circumstances.

Humanitarian workers carry real physical and emotional weight in the work they do, and staying well themselves is what allows them to keep showing up for others.

At FirstMed, we're proud to support the people who support others. Looking after those who look after the world is part of why we do what we do.

To everyone in our community doing this work: thank you, and we're here for you too.
